A friend and I spent two nights here in a 10-bed female dorm (the Aquarium). Overall, it was fine, but of course one makes certain trade offs when staying in a hostel. For instance, although our dorm was female only, the toilets and showers were unisex. Fortunately, you could get sufficient privacy to do your thing, but I confess that... More

Stayed 18-20 Aug for 2 nights with a friend. The room was cramped with almost no walking space. There's a strong smell of urine in the entire area & especially so in the bedroom. The bathrooms & toilets were in gd condition. The location is ideal. However, the price that we paid to sleep in a room that smelled like... More

Friendly reception, warm feeling building. Easy to find room, everything very clean, decent showers and plenty of them, bathrooms clean and kitchen area nice and open with plenty of space to sit and relax. Great stay, will definitely return next year.

Although in comparison to other countries the hostel does not get very cheap its one of the cheapest you can find on short notice in Edinburgh. The staff is very friendly and the place is quite nice and clean. The breakfast is a deal!! Rooms with 10 ppl can be a lot but i think there are smaller options. The... More

I stayed in this hostel with a friend for a weekend in Edinburgh after a Haggis tour. I was really impressed with the quality of the hostel: nice atmosphere, lovely staff (I only talked to two of them, Andy and Aisling, and they were both very nice to me), so close to the Royal Mile. The people who stayed in... More

The location of this place is great! Right on the Royal Mile and walking distance to train and bus station. The place seemed pretty clean but the whole place smelt slightly like pee. Thankfully I was only there for 2 nights so I didn't have to put up with the smell for too long.

Great hostel experience here. Felt very safe and secure, clean facilities, decent beds, a large kitchen/lounge, and cheap breakfast. They let travelers leave their luggage in the main area if they arrive before check-in which is always nice. Most of the staff was friendly, some were exceptionally friendly and helpful, while a few felt unfriendly/not helpful when we asked questions.... More

Lovely staff, and I felt safe the whole time I was here with all my possessions ect. Awesome location and great quality facilities! Best value for money! I would recommend this place to anyone. 10 minute walk to the new side of town and Old town at your doorstep, close to the free walking tour and Arthurs seat about a... More

It was a good hostel, nice people, nice staff, the rooms wasn't bad at all, the beds are good, not the best ones but still, you're coming to a hostel, really near to the castle, the city centre. The only thing not that good, the showers/toilets aren't entirely clean, the showers doesn't have windows they are like cabinets, for that... More

The location, decoration and staff here are amazing. There are some problems, like the smell of corridors, the hard beds and old bathrooms - sometimes the water would be too hot or too cold independent of me. But for the price paid, I think it was more than worth it. I stayed in a room of four people with another... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
