Such a great hostel. The staff were super friendly and very helpful. The rooms are really nice, much nicer than most hostels I've stayed in. The beds were pretty comfortable and the variety of common rooms was great. You have a great view of the castle and it is near everything. It even has a pick up for a free... More

I had a great solo stay in the shared female dorm. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the place had loads of character. By far my favourite place to stay in Edinburgh. Fantastic breakfast and very cheap and access to a large kitchen to cook meals. I ate out for lunch and dinner and it was an easy... More

Stayed here with friends for the Fringe festival over the August bank holiday in 2011 and it worked very well. We underutilised the big kitchen area but the beds were comfy enough (if bunks) and the location was superb (6-7 mins walk to a Sainsbury's for buying food/drink and next to Edinburgh Castle). The common room is huge and, whilst... More

Building has loads of character, large amount of common areas made of different rooms so you could be sociable or have quiet time if that was what you were after. Friendly staff. Fantastic location. We had a double room so were up the top of the building and unfortunately with the sloped roof it meant our room was not user... More

Sorry people were keeping you awake. Our friendly staff are more than happy to give noisy neighbours a good shushing late at night. ;) This is why we have such great common areas, plenty of places for people to hang out and give people looking for sleep some peace and quiet. We do have a breakfast everyday from 7:30 to... More

Overall, Castle Rock was a good value. It is very close to Edinburgh Castle, in the beautiful Old Town section of the city. Originally I had wanted to stay in a hotel in Old Town, but as it was a weekend most hotels were sold out and those that weren't were very pricey. If you want to be near the... More

I stayed at the Castle Rock during my trip to Edinburgh. The Castle Rock was a pretty nice hostel. The staff was friendly and the place was always clean. Only thing I would like to point out is the beds were not very comfortable just a piece of foam on some plywood. Other then that my stay there was excellent... More

Very conveniently situated at the bottom of Edinburgh Castle! I stayed in the 12 beds-dorm with a friend, the rooms are huge, each bed has a name so we slept with M. Fussy and M. Tall! Anyway the windows are really big and probably single glazed so you are very thankful for the good heater in the room, but we... More

If you don't mind about hygiene then this is a great hostel - friendly, helpful staff, brilliant location and a good communal area. However, the bed sheets looked and smelt unwashed and this was proven as one of our party only stayed one night and her bed linen was still on the bed for the next person (though the sheets... More

I’m sorry to hear you didn't think it was clean. I can promise you cleanliness is something we do take very seriously. The sheets are changed every day, as all our sheets are identical its quite easy to mistake one for another, a bed is never re made with dirty sheets. The bathrooms are also cleaned top to bottom twice... More

This is probably one of the best hostels I have ever stayed in. There are two communal rooms - one for fun and paying pool and one for peace and quiet. It is opposite Edinburgh Castle. We were lucky enough to be there in August when the Military Tatoo parade took place. We had no tickets but sat in the... More

This hostel is awesome. There is a big community feel-huge hang out room where tons of young people hang out, play music, etc. We stayed in a room with two sets of bunks. The room was TINY but it was fine. Bathrooms were down the hall and were co-ed. The location is incredible. It is literally directly across from Edinburgh... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
