The one thing I really like about this hostel is its location. It is so close pubs, restaurants, shops, museums and of course, the Edinburgh castle which is literally less than 50 metres away. The bed was really comfy too. Each bed has a wall plug and a mini wall lamp which I find so useful. As I stayed in... More

I stayed at castle rock hostel in a mixed dorm, for 4 nights. Great hostel with loads of character. There was free tea, coffee, hot chocolate, sugar and milk. Big fridges to chill your booze and breakfast of toast, cerial and fruit juice for £1.50. Genrally clean and tidy with friendly staff. One criticism is that the cookers in the kitchen took a good... Stayed for 3 nights with a friend and can't pretty much complain at all: friendly and laid-back atmosphere, kind and easygoing staff always ready to help. Big hostel, I was told it could fit 300 guests so prepare to deal with a busy (but big) kitchen/other common rooms. Facilities like towels, hairdryers and so on are always available and ready... Great location, clean rooms, free wi-fi, convenient prices, very friendly staff, great common area and kitchen, and free tea & coffee & hot chocolate. Names of the rooms (sherlock holmes, avengers) and beds are very sweet ^^

A bustling giant of a hostel with a wonderful staff. They make great recommendations if you need them, but you can always find people about. I also like the discounts they've worked out with bars (various) and tours (Macbackpackers). Be ready for a lot going on - it certainly isn't a small place, but the showers and bathrooms are clean... I loved staying here! The location is perfect and the staff was super helpful. There is an abundance of room choices and lots of places to hang out in the Hostel. If you wanna see the Edinburgh Castle from your window, this is the place to go! I highly recommend this place.

We stayed in 4-people private bedroom and it was really clean. The room was not big, but it was not tiny as well. The bathroom was really clean as well, and I love the fact that there was a hanger to hang your clothes and a curtain to make sure that it won't be wet. There is always free coffee,... More

You really can't beat the location of this place...right at the bottom of the castle. The price is right, the staff are friendly, there's free coffee and tea, the showers are hot and clean, and there's pretty much anything you could need. It was also surprisingly quiet and I never had trouble sleeping through the night. The common room is... More

Stayed for 3 nights in the hostel. The staff were really friendly even they get the same questions all the time. The bathrooms are very clean all the time(didn't figure when they clean),the lounge area was good and the kitchen as well. The only downside is that you don't have any space in the fridges to put some food. Also... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
