I stayed here for two nights and even kept my luggage in long term storage. The staff was very helpful. The hostel has wonderful location . Kitchen is well organised. Bathrooms were mostly clean and rooms were well heated. The fantastic location makes up for small deficient if any. I will stay at castle Rock in future as well.

Warm and welcoming, excellent service and positive energy from all the staff I encountered! A beautiful old building with modern updates (motion-sensor recessed hallway lighting, for example. Very clean and comfortable facilities all around; loved the superbly clean, hot shower best after a long day of walking. Great location at the top of Edinburgh's High Street, just at the base... Having stayed in quiet a few hostels during my nearly four weeks travel in Scotland, this one is right up there with one of the best run. And one of the most reasonably priced. You won't do better in Edinburgh imo. One thing I was impressed with is 20p for towel hire. Some lesser hostels charge £2. The rooms are... More

I stayed with castle rock for about a week at the end of April 2015. This was my first stay in a hostel, outside of arranged college study tours and I must say they know travelers. The different chill out rooms, the FREE tea, coffee and hot chocolate, well equipped (huge) kitchen, roomy and secure dorm and knowledgeable staff this... More

We only stayed for one night, but I was pleasantly impressed with the hostel. The hostel is quirky and big compared to other places I've stayed at in Edinburgh. The staff were lovely, they even let us borrow board game. Loved the free tea and coffee. The only downside was the bed. I was unfortunately given a bed right next... More

I had never been in a hostel before staying at Rock Castle Hostel and I must tell that I was afraid that it was going to be a disaster, because I wasn't used to sharing a bedroom or a bathroom or even a kitchen... But Rock Castle took all those fears away from me with their good vibes and extra... More

It is a decent hostel with very creative structuring and design of reception. The location is fantastic, it is exactly near most of sights. They have big kitchen and huge dining room, where you can make coffee or tee and small breakfast for additional small fee is served. Rooms provide a bed and a locker, there is no bed table... More

The hostel is situated right next to grassmarket with its' excellent nightlife and restaurants, and also have a very nice view of Edinburgh castle. The hostel in itself is very nice and is decorated to look like an actual castle, the environment is very cosy and they have great kitchen and bathroom facilities.

I stayed in the Castle Rock hostel for a short duration during my 1 day trip to Edinburgh. Being my first experience of staying in such a hostel, I was really impressed by the overall quality and comfort of the hostel, and the cleanliness they maintain for all areas, including the rooms, common areas and the restrooms. The staff at... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
