I booked a double room, which was very, very small. My husband and I could not open our suitcases at the same time in the room. The bed sheet was a bit dirty and the room was stuffy. On the plus side, location was good, staff were friendly.

Great location, friendly staff, secure, clean, accommodating; what more do you need? The breakfast is not included but it's pretty cheap and fair for the price. Stayed during Fringe, so it was slightly more expensive but so close to all the festival venues. And the staff is very friendly and inviting, which as a solo traveller, I really appreciated!

This is a really lovely hostel just off the Royal Mile looking out over the Castle, so it a fabulous location to stay whilst exploring Edinburgh. The staff are lovely and there's loads of great space in the common areas. Everywhere is clean and you have free wifi and tea and coffee plus 24 hour reception. Would highly recommend this... More

amazing location, (good for having a nice view of the fireworks at Fringe festival), walking distance to several turistic areas. good for the price, the rooms were big enough, clean and the facilities also good. the staff was incredibly nice. highly recommended.

Castle Rock Hostel is in a great location opposite the castle. The staff are friendly and there is some security in the form of a door you need to show a card to be buzzed through. I booked a double room which just about fitted the bed in and had a small sink and shelf. The sheets were old and... More

I've now been to Castle Rock three times, and every time I go I have a wonderful time. The atmosphere is amazing, the people great, the staff helpful, and it's always clean. Everyone is always friendly, it's very easy to make friends, even when travelling alone. If you're looking for an experience that will change the way you view travelling... More

We arrived in Edinburgh after a long and exhausting walk on the Skye-Trail, where we did camp for the whole week. The Castle Rock Hostel was like an oasis: -small, but nice and clean room with a great view over the city -laundry service for 3,50 pounds, they even brought the clean and dryed clothes into our room -simple but... Me and my girlfriend had an amazing experience at Castle Rock. The place is just across Edinburgh Castle. All things were just a walk away. They had accomodating staff. The hostel was a great great value for the money. Best of all, with free unlimited coffee/tea/choco drink at the lounge. HIGHLY recommended.

Castle Rock Hostel has figured out the hostel game! The building is in a great location, right across from Edinburgh Castle, at the top of the Royal Mile, and just around the corner from Grassmarket The staff were very friendly and helpful, the entire place was clean (including the showers!), and breakfast for £1.50 was very reasonable (a bowl of... Location is spot on: right at the foot of the castle. Place itself is very cute with lovely big common areas (including a music room) -- but teeny tiny rooms. The rooms have cute themes eg we stayed in Star Wars and fought over who had to have the Yoda bed. Staff are nice and very helpful. And Australian (of... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
