This hostel has a real good location. Across the street to the north is the Edinburgh castle, and to the south it has a panoramic view of the city. The price of this hostel is reasonable, and it is always good to meet people from all over the world.

Castle Rock is easy enough to find, is insanely cheap, has everything you need from a hostel and the staff seemed alright as well. I was there with friends just for a weekend and quite frankly for what you're getting, the Castle rock is an absolute bargain. It offers everything you need and that is simply why I gave it... More

Getting there is the worst part of this hostel, but once you're there it's the most convenient. Situated literally off to the one side of the Castle Rock, it's makes touring the Royal Mile a breeze. The accommodations were tailored to a younger crowd, but I didn't feel out of place. Many amenities. Comfy rooms. Clean sheets. It's what a... More

If you like huge hostels with huge common areas, and loads of people in groups then this was fine. But as a single traveller I felt quite intimidated in this hostel, walking into the common rooms where big groups of people were sat around on every seat! That said, if you do know people, it's fine. The room I stayed... More

Great hostel. Some of the most comfortable beds ever. Great staff and the free coffee is a great plus. The place has a real charm to it and when you step out the door you're looking right up at the castle!

We were in Edinburgh for a 6 Nations Rugby Match so prices were sky high and late availability was limited. The Castle Rock Hostel had some good reviews, was in a great location and reasonable prices compared with others and had a room available. So we decided to give it a go. As I said its location is great at... More

This one was one of the best hostels I`ve ever stayed at. Super clean and with great people in reception. Breakfast was OK for a hostel, but what really called my attention was that the rooms and bathrooms were always cleaned. Great location in Edinburgh as well.

Castle Rock Hostel is in a fabulous location, clean and has a great kitchen with plenty of fridge and bench space and numerous stove tops. There are a number of common areas to relax in, wifi works throughout the hostel and security is great. You have to show a pass for entry and there are large individual lockers in each... More

This hostel is extremely close to the castle - when you walk outside you look to the left and there it is! It's just up some (tedious) stairs. This is a great location for anyone backpacker traveling to Edinburgh and it's a good price with a nice vibe.

I have stayed here twice in the past 2 weeks. Awesome view of the castle! The location is right at the top of the Royal Mile so not far at all from Grassmarket or anything else for that matter. Excellent location. Beds are comfortable and bunk beds are solid and dont make much noise during the night. This place is... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
