This one was one of the best hostels I`ve ever stayed at. Super clean and with great people in reception. Breakfast was OK for a hostel, but what really called my attention was that the rooms and bathrooms were always cleaned. Great location in Edinburgh as well.

Castle Rock Hostel is in a fabulous location, clean and has a great kitchen with plenty of fridge and bench space and numerous stove tops. There are a number of common areas to relax in, wifi works throughout the hostel and security is great. You have to show a pass for entry and there are large individual lockers in each... More

This hostel is extremely close to the castle - when you walk outside you look to the left and there it is! It's just up some (tedious) stairs. This is a great location for anyone backpacker traveling to Edinburgh and it's a good price with a nice vibe.

I have stayed here twice in the past 2 weeks. Awesome view of the castle! The location is right at the top of the Royal Mile so not far at all from Grassmarket or anything else for that matter. Excellent location. Beds are comfortable and bunk beds are solid and dont make much noise during the night. This place is... More

This will definitely be my #1 accommodation choice when I return to Edinburgh. The hostel is just brilliant - the old building almost feels like a castle. There are plenty of common areas including a kitchen and internet lounge. The free wifi is pretty good. Free tea and coffee is available all day too. The room itself was okay. The... More

I spent 4 months in this hostal and it has been just amazing. Stunning areas, library, pool, garden huge kitchen... I love this company , they owns so many other hostals around Scotland. Reccomend It. Bedrooms bit messy but does not depend from them but from the people however If you get a private room well...good times are waiting for Ya!

Honestly, even if it wasn't in such a great location- right opposite the castle!- the shower pressure in this place is enough to recommend it. Lockers in the room, good kitchen, free coffee/tea/hot chocolate, breakfast for 1.5 pounds... It was all good.

Great hotel, in a very good location right next to the castle. The staff were very welcoming, the rooms great, although the side of the bunk beds are a tad low. The pub crawl on a Thursday night is a great laugh & definitely recommended

We had an awesome time staying here! Big hostel with several cool lounges & movie room, well equipped kitchen. Location in the old town is great, walking distance from many attractions, restaurants and bars, of which the staff are great at providing recommendations. Views to the castle itself are spectacular. Fun activities going on at the hostel itself including pub... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
