Castle Rock Hostel has figured out the hostel game! The building is in a great location, right across from Edinburgh Castle, at the top of the Royal Mile, and just around the corner from Grassmarket The staff were very friendly and helpful, the entire place was clean (including the showers!), and breakfast for £1.50 was very reasonable (a bowl of... Location is spot on: right at the foot of the castle. Place itself is very cute with lovely big common areas (including a music room) -- but teeny tiny rooms. The rooms have cute themes eg we stayed in Star Wars and fought over who had to have the Yoda bed. Staff are nice and very helpful. And Australian (of... More

I was shocked how they made the rooms look big in pictures, it was really really small . And it cost $100 Canadian a night ! We spent all our time out in the city anyway and they have really nice common areas. But if you like a bit of a private space, you have a bed. lol . And... More

Castle Rock Hostel was a great place to stay. The staff were very friendly and helpful, we were comfortable during our visit, and the location made it easy for us to explore all the major landmarks of Edinburgh.

Surrounded by other beautiful landmarks of Edinburgh, this hostel does not slack off to compete. The deco was nicely done and the you can see lots of artistic touch to make sure you have a true Scottish experience. The people working there were friendly and helpful, and sometime offer you some free shots as well.

Superbly run hostel. Staff are great and there is a friendly vibe to the whole place. It's a big, buzzing hostel but still organised and comfortable, with none of the seedy party atmosphere you find in some hostels. Location is outstanding. In the heart of the old city and right near Edinburgh castle. And it's great value! After weeks of... More

Location - a stones throw away from High Street/The Royal Mile & 10 minutes walk from Waverly Train Station - couldn't have been more accessibly located. I stayed in an all girls dorm - nice and quiet each night and slept well, which is important when you have a busy day ahead at the Fringe! The staff were all helpful... More

This was not a terrible hostel and not a great hostel. The room was fairly clean, although the bathrooms made me a bit nervous - and were not always kept clean. It had a beautiful view out of the windows, though, and was literally next to the castle. You walked up a set of stairs and were at the entrance.... More

I was backpacking through Europe with a friend and this was the 2nd hostel we visited. The staff was super friendly and knowledgeable. They explained to us where to go, what to see, where to eat and I couldn't have asked for better service. They have a lounge and music room and it was just a fun time there. Step... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
