I stayed in a 16 bed mix dorm and it was great. The bed is clean and had 2 power outlet for each bed together with a bedside lamp. There is free coffee, tea and hot chocolate all day. You can also hire clean towel from the hostel very cheaply. Shower and toilet facilities is clean and good as well.... More

There are several good things about this hostel: the location is excellent, the plumbing efficient, there are free hot drinks and good value breakfast. However I had a poor night's sleep because of school parties thundering up and down the corridors and screeching. Also the bicycle storage area was down two flights of steep stairs, which was very awkward.

I spent three nights at the Castle Rock Hostel and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. In addition to the great value offered by the institution as well as a stellar location, I think the staff, rooms and facilities were exceptional. Upon arrival, the staff were efficient and attentive when checking in patrons, ensuring we were comfortable in the Hostel as well... More

The view from our 4-bed room was simply amazing! A very cozy hostel that felt very safe. It was very well-located, near to Waverly Bridge (for the bus to the airport), to Edinburgh castle, with many nice restaurants and eateries nearby. Very convenient place to stay and explore Edinburgh, a beautiful city.

We've spend there 2 nights in 4-bed room. Our room, the Fab Four, was on the top floor. Our window looked out onto the roof with magnificent rooftop views of the castle. On our floor all the rooms have unique names: — Robin Hood and Maid Marion — Anthony and Cleopatra — Heroes — Avengers — Sherlock Holmes — Scottish... More

Me and my sister decided to go to this hostel as wanted to explore Edinburgh and save money so we could spend else where. For me this was my 1st time in a hostel so was a bit weary of going and sharing a rm wit strangers. On arrival we were greeted by a friendly staff who was willing to... More

Stayed in this hostel for 5 days, had a good time, they have a nice common room and a separate movie room. Dorm room (clans of Scotland) was big and had a large window. Only thing I noticed was the breakfast being pretty basic but also cheap. The location is excellent, near the castle and the royal mile.

Upon my arrival, I previously had a very negative experience when it came to hostels, but this one blew me away. From the customer service and friendliness of the employees to the cleanliness of the bathrooms. I stayed in a 12-bed mixed dorm and it was perfectly fine. The rooms were very clean and I was shocked by how much... More

This hostel is well located in Edinburgh, the rooms are not bad and the hygiene is not the best but it's just OK. If you can grab breakfast elsewhere it will be more enjoyable. Wifi needs improvement and staff need better training. It is a packed place where you can meet a lot of travellers.

I was very impressed with Castle Rock! The building was really neat, had an amazing location, and the rooms were big and clean! The staff was friendly and it was a great atmosphere. Would definitely stay again.

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
