We've spend there 2 nights in 4-bed room. Our room, the Fab Four, was on the top floor. Our window looked out onto the roof with magnificent rooftop views of the castle. On our floor all the rooms have unique names: — Robin Hood and Maid Marion — Anthony and Cleopatra — Heroes — Avengers — Sherlock Holmes — Scottish... More

Me and my sister decided to go to this hostel as wanted to explore Edinburgh and save money so we could spend else where. For me this was my 1st time in a hostel so was a bit weary of going and sharing a rm wit strangers. On arrival we were greeted by a friendly staff who was willing to... More

Stayed in this hostel for 5 days, had a good time, they have a nice common room and a separate movie room. Dorm room (clans of Scotland) was big and had a large window. Only thing I noticed was the breakfast being pretty basic but also cheap. The location is excellent, near the castle and the royal mile.

Upon my arrival, I previously had a very negative experience when it came to hostels, but this one blew me away. From the customer service and friendliness of the employees to the cleanliness of the bathrooms. I stayed in a 12-bed mixed dorm and it was perfectly fine. The rooms were very clean and I was shocked by how much... More

This hostel is well located in Edinburgh, the rooms are not bad and the hygiene is not the best but it's just OK. If you can grab breakfast elsewhere it will be more enjoyable. Wifi needs improvement and staff need better training. It is a packed place where you can meet a lot of travellers.

I was very impressed with Castle Rock! The building was really neat, had an amazing location, and the rooms were big and clean! The staff was friendly and it was a great atmosphere. Would definitely stay again.

I only stayed here one night but was very impressive by the friendly and welcoming nature of this hostel. Staff were really nice and common facilities like the kitchen and dining rooms were really well stocked. Beds were comfy, good secure lockers. I was disappointed that there were no personal reading lights and power outlets at each bed though. The... More

I stayed in a 12-bed all-female room. It was an excellent opportunity to meet a lot of fellow travelers, and actually wasn't too noisy at night. Exceptionally good: - Friendly atmosphere which is good for meeting people - Free pub crawl on Thursday nights (entertaining even if you don't drink) - No hidden fees - Surprisingly quiet during sleeping hours... Sad to say trying to save money didn't pan out! Castle Rock Hostel was hard to find with one way streets, no street signs, construction etc... There was NO elevator and NO parking for people with a car! Having a handicap presented an issue Was 20.00 pounds per night to park 2 blocks AWAY for and 18.00 pound room. Finally... More

I only stayed at Castle Rock for a night after a Highland tour and it was a surprisingly comfortable stay. Excellent location, friendly staff and comfortable rooms; not to mention the great price! I also had to check out early (like 4AM) but the front desk is open 24hrs. Bathrooms are clean and well maintained. I had heard it's a... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
