Stayed here last weekend for the festival in a 14 bed mixed dorm, Room 1. The hostel is incredibly run-down and really dirty. The bathrooms are filthy with non of the toilet's locking properly and the showers covered in mould!! I had used chewing gum stuck around the edges of my bed! With only 3 toilets for 2 floors with... I wasn't expecting much since this was the second hostel we've ever stayed in but I was very happy with how things went. We stayed in a private room that was separate from the main hostel, but still had bathrooms, showers, and a kitchen. I didn't see the state of the kitchen, so I won't be any help there but... More

The location of this hostel is amazing, and the building itself. The staff were helpful. Some issues: the place is very tatty in places, poor state of repair. For example, the latches in the toilets were broken, but someone had repaired them in such a way that the wood behind them had been damaged when they were used. The soap... More

On turning up a the hostel the Compact reception area was busy as a party of 6 were booking in, so I was invited to take a seat it took about 10 minutes for them to get to me not a problem for me, when it came to me the staff were friendly & efficient. Gave me all the details... More

The great thing about this hostel is that it is in the center of town right off the Royal Mile. Inconvenient is that the bathrooms are not on the same floor and the steps in the middle of the night are tough. We were up several floors and there is no elevator. Lesson learned, travel light. People were very friendly.... More

This hostel was the cheapest I could find for a private room for me and my boyfriend. However the price was really reflected in the quality. We went in November so it was quiet. I understand the building was old but the walls were paper thin. The private rooms are in a separate building across the road which was good... More

As two college students studying abroad, we needed a cheap place to stay for 2 nights over the weekend. We stayed in Room 1, a 14 bed mixed room. It was mostly full of teenagers like ourselves. Like you can imagine when you're sharing a room with so many people, it can be difficult to fall asleep due to lights... More

We stayed there for four nights and in three rooms (was our fault ). The first room (n°6) was ok, every bed had 2 plugs but the WiFi depends too much on wich part you're staying in the room. The same happened to the last room (n°7) but the light from the passage that led to the bathroom was kinda... More

The main building is alright I guess, but I was placed in the other building that is around the corner down an alley. It is dark, dingy, and creepy. Also, I was put in a different room than all of my friends. That would have been okay, but as a 5'4" defenseless woman I was put in a room with... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
