Situated in a row of classic Georgian townhouses in New Town, this hotel was extremely welcoming and comfortable. I can recommend the kitchen for dinner. My room was a good size with a magnificent bathroom which had the largest footed tub I've ever had the pleasure to soak in. A separate closet-room, which helped me keep my mess (of shopping,... We had a nice 3 night stay at the Howard. Maybe the only negative thing was that our terraced suite was more like a basement suite... It was in the basement and that's why quite dark. The bathroom was really spacious and beautiful. Butler service was excellent all the time. And we loved the breakfasts!

A wonderful review and fantatsic to read how impressed this guest was with our famous Butler service - we do work hard to ensure this quality service separates The Howard from our competition. Leon Kiteley General Manager More

We stayed at The Howard for one night and were very impressed. Our room was big and the bathroom was super complete with large roll top bath. The breakfast was terrific - served on hot plates! The butler service was swift and the staff could not have done more to make you feel welcome. Would recommend it without hesitation and... More

It was a toss up between The Howard and The Missoni. Had we known that the weather was to be amazing, sunny and warm, we would have gone for the Missoni, but our thoughts were "modern, hard surfaces, not cosy in the cold". The Howard is excellent and really good value, the price of an Ibis in Northern France! The... More

A sincere and thoughtful review - my thanks to this guest for their kind words and for sharing their experiences with the wider community of travellers. Such reviews always make my day, and, more importantly, really motivate the team here at The Howard. I look forward to welcoming this guest back to Edinburgh before too long.......... One of the best hotels we have ever stayed in. It was relaxed luxury. I booked the hotel the night before and called to confirm all the details at the time asking if we could add the whisky tasting to our booking despite the website saying it would need seven days advanced booking. Nothing was too much trouble for the... More

At The Howard, you are welcomed into a spacious Georgian townhouse, elegantly appointed and deliciously executed. As an addict of British mini-series, this hotel was a dream come true. The 21st century twist (besides luxuriously spacious commodes - the bathroom was about the size of my entire New York apartment) is that your host is not a member of the... More

Stayed in the cockburn room and it was excellent. Travelled with two children and they made us feel welcome and comfortable. Excellent service by the butlers and superb breakfast! Will go back for sure and recommend to all.

Room was booked (and paid for) as a gift 4 months in advance, the day before we arrived the hotel phoned to tell us we would have to stay in another hotel as they had made a mistake with the booking there was no space (even though we had confirmed the booking the week before). After hours of discussion and... More

My partner surprised me with a romantic stay for the week end here. Champagne waiting for me, afternoon tea. The room was a good size with very comfortable bed, good sized bath and shower. Room service lovely. Staff very helpful and pleasant.

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
