This was a unique experience. From the room to the common areas of the hotel, up to the breakfast, everything was amazing. I was in Edinburgh for a conference and with my wife we thought to experience something different from the standard. This was definitely worth it!

My wife and I had a lovely 2-night stay in The Cockburn, which The Howard classifies as a junior suite, a weak description for such roomy and sumptuously decorated accommodations. Our king bed with canopied headboard was fit for the Granthams. The large bathroom was truly stunning, with a capacious claw-foot tub, separate shower stall, and two free-standing sinks to... More

Thank you for such a detailed and honest review. The plumbing issue has now been fixed, we hope that on your next stay you will give us 5 stars!. For those who are sensitive to street noise, I do agree that our backward facing rooms, especially our suites are fantastic. Andrew Smith Head Butler/Deputy GM More

A lovely greeting on check in, quick and efficient without being over official. Happy to help with any request from having your pants pressed to providing detailed directions to your first visiting point. The charm of this older establishment is felt immediately upon arrival and stays with you for entire visit.

Being pampered is not something I usually expect on a business trip. The Howard excels! On arrival, your car is valet parked, a butler takes you to your room and will even unpack and make you a cup of tea or coffee. My room was well equipped and the bed was immaculately clean and comfortable. if I had one niggle,... More

A warm welcome greets you at the Howard. The staff are very helpful and friendly. It's a traditional hotel with an old world charm that has been lost in so many modern hotels. The public rooms are comfortable and quiet as are the bedrooms - which are also very spacious with good quality furnishings. A hearty morning breakfast in the... More

This was our second stay at The Howard and it continues to live up to great expectations. Coffee in the Lounge on arrival was a relaxing setting although not so the next day when a small group of people seemed to be having a business meeting all day in part of the Lounge. We were so glad The Howard staff... More

Five star hotel with 6 star staff. We had our wedding reception at the hotel and also stayed for a few days either side. For a small intimate wedding (40 guests) you cannot ask for a more perfect venue in Edinburgh. There were some small bumps along they way as you would expect planning and organising a wedding, however, the... More

It's humanity and personality that make the difference to a place. Edinburgh in general, and the Howard in particular, have both in plenty. Strongly recommended. Spend time here.......................

It was a disaster from start to finish, the Butler service for unpacking had to booked in advance, although this was not advertised as clearly as the service was. The shower didn't work, the cold tap in the bathroom didn't work, there was no hot water in the bath. shower was filthy The s In a gust of wind a... More

I am sorry to read that this guest left us unhappy which is most unusual although I believe we did manage to address some of her concerns prior to departure. This guest was a little confused - we do NOT need prior notification for the unpacking service - only to be told that it is required. The guest in question... More

I have hesitated a lot before I gave my grade. My stay had complications, but the staff was so nice that... The hotel is a huge townhouse very nicely decorated. The rooms are very nice, mine was a junior suite and bathroom included, I was pleasantly surprised. Breakfast is lovely. We had an issue with the cleanliness of the bathroom.... More

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
