Good location, nice enough guy running the place but very grotty, in need of deep clean and update. Beds had throws that were very badly stained. Why clean the sheets and still use them? No excuse for poor standards like that these days.

JafaExplorer makes a good point and so does the manager of the Tankard. The place is a guest house, not a hotel. The interior is somewhat dated but comfortable and clean. We had a basement family room at the cost of a double room, staying for 3 nights. The room had the comfort of a bedroom without the luxury of... More

Me and my boyfriend stayed in the Tankard for one night during the jubilee weekend. The room we were allocated to was so dirty, it looked like no one vacuum cleaned the floor for ages! There was some rubbish left by the previous guests in the drawers of the bedside table and there was hair in the blanked that was... More

The other reviews are pretty harsh and to some degree I can understand and agree with them. The decor is certainly pretty dire - very dated and not especially clean. Perhaps the overall charm of Edinburgh had put me in a good mood, because I was happy enough to stay there for four nights. It was a handy location, close... More

I didn't even get to this b&b. Was attempting to book with whom I could only assume was the owner. He spent the call wheezing and said I might have an en-suite but it couldn't be guaranteed. He made out that he was doing me the favour by offering me somewhere to say. After the call ended I decided to... More

If you need a cheap place and are prepared to have someone walk into the room do so. I finished the breakfast went back into the room and he was making the bed. He left when I stood there and looked at him, I opened the door and he is cleaning the radiator. I think he wanted me to leave... More

After returning to Edinburgh from 3 glorious days on Skye I booked last minute. The location is very convenient and on approach I thought I'd hit the guesthouse jackpot. Beware, appearances are definately deceiving. While it looks lovely from the footpath the minute I stept through the front door I was hit with the overheated stench of a combination of charity... On coming into the Tankard B&B to collect our keys the stench of charity shop overwhelmed my friend and I and the deteriorating war-time decor made me feel like I had been thrown back in time. Our room had 3 beds and there were only 2 of us staying there - not a problem but rather wasteful. To their credit,... More
