Great little hotel with great access to downtown either via bus (only 1/2 block away) or walking (about 30 minutes). About 10 minutes away from Haymarket train station. Very clean with very friendly owners. They stored our luggage in their apartment while we went out for a walk before catching the train. Fresh cooked Scottish breakfast served to your table... More

We stayed for 1 night in this beautiful period house, converted into a Hotel. Our room was really tastefully decorated, and scrupiously clean. The bed was very comfy, and we had everyhting we needed. The owner Murdo was really informative, and made us feel really welcome... it was like a home from home. Bracken the dog added to the pleasurable... More

My partner and I stayed at Duthus for three nights and just loved it. It was far enough from the city center that we were able to escape the hoardes of August tourists, but close enough that a bus or taxi ride (or a 15 minute walk) got us to downtown. Murdo and his wife are delightful and their service... More

This "Bed & Breakfast" is in a great position for visiting the city, and the dining room and breakfast were very good. The hosts were very friendly, and the gardens are lovely. What disappointed me was the back room I was given which was small and dark, having no window, just a skylight. It had the tiniest shower room with... More

I stayed here for a week, on July '09. Rooms are very confortable, I got a warm and hearty welcome. Good bathroom with shower. Wi-fi Internet available. Breackfast is very good. It's very well connected to Edinburgh center: it just takes 5/10 minutes by walking, or you can get on one of the many and frequent buses you can take... More

We had a great time at Duthus Lodge. Mr McLeod and family were very friendly and helpful. A beautiful house with comfortable rooms, good food, the castle being a few minutes away, no car parking hassles, perfect setting for a holiday. Would love to come back here again.

What a great hotel. Had originally booked the Osborne Hotel but after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor, we decided to look for somewhere else. And we're so glad we did. Great location (on quite a busy road, but you couldn't hear the noise and it made getting a cab easy). Murdo and Kay were lovely hosts - it was... More

This guest house has everything you would want for a stay in Edinburgh. The room was spacious, spotless with excellent en-suite facilities and the breakfast was beautifully cooked. The owners, Murdo and Kay, were very friendly and helpful and made us feel welcome and offered many tips to make the most of our stay. The location was easily accessed from... More

Murdo MacLeod and wife and English bulldog give you a warm welcome to their spotless home. Our bedroom was larger than most and the "ensuite" was a full bathroom that Americans are used to. Breakfast choices were varied and excellent. Mr. MacLeod has bus passes for sale and gives you information on every part of Edinburgh. For 70 pounds a... More

Apart from a shortage of well located powerpoints in the room, our stay here was fantastic. Rooms great, breakfast great, in other words you have to be very criical to fault this location. Murdo and Kay are great hosts, and the staff is friendly and very helpful. Close to city, public transport at the door, 5-10 minute walk from Haymarket... More

Staying in West End

Neighborhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighborhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theaters and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
