Just returned from a lovely break at this great hotel. Our room was lovely, spotlessly clean, our breakfasts were excellent, we ate in the restaurant one evening and the food was first class. The hotel has a lovely outside area for sitting relaxing with a drink or a coffee. All the staff were first class. The hotel is well positioned... More

The room was excellent, well equipped and spacious. I did think that the mini bar sundries were over priced . The bed was very comfortable and conjusive to a good nights sleep. Breakfast was served by very friendly staff and a good selection on the menu.

Really lovely hotel, fab rooms and great service! One thing I would say £17 for breakfast that's not included in the original price was a bit of a rip off! If you're stay at Hotel du Vin go out for breakfast, there's loads of great breakfast spots in the lanes for a quarter of the price!

This is a lovely hotel in a great location. Would really recommend it ! Our room was great. The only thing that let them down was the service in the bistro & also the "whisky den" - apart from that - its a great little hotel !

It was all about location! This quaint hotel is in a great area. Convenient to all tourist attractions. The staff is friendly and helpful. The hotel has a restaurant and outdoor sitting/eating area, and cigar smoking area. Was there for 4 nights. Shared a double twin room with a friend. Room was a bit tight- not enough room for two... Stayed here a number of times on business. Small rooms are very small, so opt for a larger room. Nice Nespresso machines and good comfy beds. The larger rooms have the usual bath and/or shower in the room itself, so not great for families in some cases. Food and drink is very good. Staff are great although breakfast staff could... More

Boutique style hotel in lovely old building and within easy walking distance of historic spots of Edinburgh. No parking at hotel but car park not too far away. Friendly welcoming staff at reception who took our bag and showed us to our room. We had standard room which was fine, nice big bathroom with good shower. No milk with tea/coffee... More

Stayed her for one night in June. Was intrigued by its history as an asylum and was looking forward to stay. Arrived before check-in time and asked if we could leave bag which was no problem, checked us in and kept bag until we returned later. When we returned we were shown to our room , our bag had already... More

We dropped in after a long walk on a warm day. Restuarant is deceptive from the outside; there is a conservatory style seating at the back which looks out. An attentive waiter, good wine and well prepared food make for a great lunch. Good venue for family meet-ups as well!

We spent a fantastic 3 nights at this hotel as a treat to ourselves. So glad we spent the extra and we were delighted to be given an upgrade too............This was an old Lunatic Asylum so is full of history. One of the Staff pointed out the original manacles , still attached to the old walls , that were used... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
