York House is very conveniently situated and within walking distance to most of the sights in Edinburgh and good if you're coming by train. The place looks like it has seen better days as there are some wear and tear around the hotel and in the rooms. Service is efficient. Overall, it is fair value for the price we paid,... More

York House is a nice place to stay for travelers on a budget. It is close to everything and only a short cab ride from Waverly Station. I was only there to sleep so the size of the room was not a bother. There is a TV but with all of Edinburgh outside who wants to sit in and watch... More

Excellent value for money... Conveniently located 10 minutes walk from Princess Street and 30 minutes to the Old Town. Thanks to the York House Hotel and their charming and cosmopolitan staff, our Edinburgh trip was fabulous and entertaining. Our room was of a very good size and clean, with a nice flat screen television. The bathroom was welcoming and all... More

My 9 year old daughter and I had a day trip arranged, and had such a wonderful time in the city that when I called my husband, he suggested we get a hotel and stay over rather than catching the train later that evening. We quickly found York House which is just around the corner from all the main shopping... More

Just had an overnight stay here and after reading reviews I was a bit worried but this hotel is fab. Basic but clean and comfy! Staff are really friendly and helpful. No lift but what's a couple of flights of stairs? Can't go wrong for how cheap it is!

My friends have just returned from a 2 night stay, and would highly recommend this hotel. The hotel is spotless, staff very friendly and breakfast was great. It is well situated and handy for most amenities. As it is grade listed building, it does not have a lift and it is over 5 floors. However the staff will try and... More

A good hotel if you are on a budget. Great location but it is next to the bus station. Didn't really bother us though as the main street had its own noise when the bars close. We were there during a rugby match and luckily the men were not too loud. Room was adequate but dated. Tv was not great... More

The hotel is in a good location and the staff are as helpful as can be expected. They were well polished. We arrived early and were let into our room six hours early, which was a massive bonus and suited my wife and I superbly. The room was large, clean and tidy and had amply tea and coffee. The bed was... More

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights. It was clean, had adequate room facilities, and was well placed for exploring the city. I also thought it was expensive for what it was. But then again it was conveniently located. A bit of a conundrum. I would definitely recommend it for a short stay, but you wouldn't want to stay... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
