Had a drink here on Sat 23rd lunch time and enjoyed it that much we booked a table for a meal on the night, 4 of us went and we all had a fantastic meal no complaints at all and it was very reasonable in price as well. I had home made soup to start with then sizzling chicken platter... More

While passing through Moffat, the five of us stopped in the Black Bull's Railway Bar for a light lunch. The food was great, the Haggis Fritters were gorgeous. All the portions were large. Because we couldn't do the Cheese and Biscuits justice, we were given take away boxes so that we could all snack later. Staff were very friendly and... More

We were staying two nights on a voucher, using the hotel as a base for exploration of the area. We found the staff friendly and the room was comfortable. Evening meals were excellent, though our favoured meal from the menu was unavailable both evenings. Breakfast first morning was excellent, second morning average (we got the impression morning was chef's day... More

Having only paid £72 for a two night stay on an evoucher deal, I can only agree with the saying 'you only get what you pay for'. Our room was directly opposite The Railway Bar, so we had to put up with very loud music until late, join in with the teenagers who love loud music, or close the window... More

We recently visited Black Bull for lunch, what a big mistake. The fair haired lady who works there was very rude, some of the meals were not cooked and had to be sent back, theI would not recommend this establishment to anyone to visit,a lot of training required for .staff in Customer Care,Catering and housekeeping.

Possibly the most unhelpful staff I've encountered. After asking about a gluten allergy we were told there would be "probably nothing you can eat" over our four day stay, despite specifically mentioning this when booking and being told they could cater. Impossible to find any staff when looking to check out/order a drink, and on one occasion we found the... More

Stayed for 2 nights with an internet offer - 2 nights B&B plus bottle of wine £72. So cannot complain paying £36 per night B&B but would not have been happy if had to pay full price. We dont do posh and prefer pubs to hotels but this place could really do with somne TLC. It is a lovely old... More

If you are looking for a place to stay in Moffat and this is your only option, keep looking. It is a poorly run tip, we think a couple of locals must have won the pub in a bet, they haven't the first idea. The rooms are in dis repair, had not been cleaned and they had still managed to... More

We was on a coach trip to Scotland, and on our return home the coach stopped in Moffat, we went into the town and did some shopping and went into the Black Bull bar for something to eat, thought it would be a nice place to eat, looked at the menu and we decided to just get a cold sandwich... More

We love Moffat and have stayed many times, but this was our first stay in the Black Bull. We are quite happy with basic 'pub accommodation' and when we checked out the Black Bull web site in March 2013 it looked great, so we booked for 2 nights at the end of June. The room we were allocated was not... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Black Bull Hotel in the heart of Moffat, Dumfries and Galloway was established in 1568. It was used as the headquarters for Graham of Claverhouse and his dragoons. They were sent by the English king to ruthlessly put down religious rebels in the South-West Borders. Another famous patron who we are more proud of was the Scottish Bard, Robert Burns who we are certain spent many hours drinking and in keeping with his reputation, womanising. In fact, the great man etched a poem onto one of the windows in our self named "Burns Room" and we have a replica of this window for guests and patrons to see. Steeped in History and amongst one of the oldest hotels in Scotland, the Black Bull provides a comfortable and lively base, serving day trippers, tourists, business visitors and the local community alike with superb food served daily. Whatever your tipple, we have a wide range of cask ales, draught beers and lagers and whisky. We regularly have entertainment on in both of our bars, Traditional Folk music in our lounge bar and anything from Kareoke to Live Bands in our railway bar. Whatever your reasons for travel, be sure to drop into The Black Bull for a visit! ... more   less
