The Balcary Bay hotel seems to be cursed by endless complaints and negative views from the local villagers who we met on the way through Auchencairn, complaining that the hotel manager/host Graham Lamb is an increasingly difficult crank case; which may explain why so many of the hotel staff are on temporary assignments and there are frequent interruptions and errors... more

We stayed at the Balcary Bary for three nights on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis. The room we had was pleasant - it was fairly small and could have done with modernising, however it was comfortable and had views over the bay. We had our dog with us - the fact that the hotel was pet friendly had been... more

I travel for a living and have experienced hundreds of hotels across the world so when you choose to stay in one for a leisure break you always hope for the best....sadly this hotel failed to deliver on many of the basics........the best thing about this hotel was the view and some of the food - lots of other elements... more

..and you can't be much closer than this great place literally on the beach. Fantastic location for a realxing country esacpe. Great place, very good housekeeping and efficient service that was professional and efficient. If you like your service on the obsequious side go elsewhere, here they are professional and courteous without being obtrusive. The hotel was uniformly warm (a... more

Our second visit last November and we will be back. The hotel was lovely and warm with real log fires in the lounge in the evenings, If you want an up-to-the minute bathroom, try Room 10 - the bathroom is fabulous, and the bedrom has fantastic views over the bay. We love this hotel which is the perfect place for a... more

The food is to die for, and the views and location superb. Everything else leaves a lot to be desired. Attitude by the manager/owner? makes you feel on edge and unwelcome. Rooms need serious updating and the bed was incredibly uncomfortable, that I just couldn't sleep. Cleaning needs to be a bit more vigorous (dusty and bits left on carpet.... more

On arrival the welcome was cold. The response we got when we asked whether we needed to book a time for dinner or whether we could book a window seat was one of impatience. No we could not book a time or seat just turn up between 7.00 and 8.30. The sea view which we paid extra for allowed us... more

We stayed at Balcary Bay for 1 night en route to further north in Scotland. The hotel has a fantastic location right on the sea, and our room had a great view - or it would have done if it had not been pouring with rain. Well, this was Scotland. The room was large and comfortable, and had the usual... more

The whole atmosphere of this Hotel is 'unwelcoming and unfriendly'. The en-suite in our room had a threadbare carpet and a shower screen that was rusty. The television was a tiny portable with all 4 stations unwatchable. When paying the bill, I offered some friendly feedback by suggesting they put freeview in all their rooms. The comment I recieved was,... more

On arrival the reception was fairly cold with no eye contact and a more official rather than friendly welcome. We were given a lightening tour of the hotel and then shown to our room with a belated offer to carry luggage for us. We stayed in room 3, a reasonable sized room with three windows giving a spectacular view of... more
