We stayed at this hotel for two nights recently. This hotel is in a beautiful situation but when we drove up, the first thing we noticed was the huge amount of weeds growing around the front entrance. It is very obvious that the staff are 'new' and require to be trained much better than they are. The receptionist/barmaid/waitress (same woman)... More

just spent two night at this hotel - would have to agree completely with 'olwen m' whose review I have just read. The food in particular the breakfast left much to be desired. There was no bacon on our first morning. One member of staff on duty who was expected to do everything., By the time my breakfast came the... More

We are just back from a 4 night stay at the Putechan. I had noticed the hotel on Amazon local but the deal was only for 2 nights and we were looking for a longer stay. The reviews seemed good and the price reasonable so we decided to book for a week. Unfortunately none of their balcony rooms were available... More

My husband and I are just back from a delightful stay at the Putechan. Accommodation, food and staff were all of the finest quality. The only downsides were the inability to remember how to pronounce `pooch-e-kin` and the lack of eggcups! Despite its nearness to the road there was no intrusive traffic noise from the occasional big timber lorries and... More

This hotel has the potential to be outstanding but to say it missed a trick would be to suggest that only one magician could have put it right on his own. There is only a limited period during which being under new ownership can be used as an excuse for weaknesses across the board. Although a couple of staff members... More

We stayed here on 9th July for two nights. We were greeted by a lovely cheerful receptionist who I belief her name was Hannah. We booked one of the rooms with a balcony at the front of the hotel and what a lovely room it was. Beautiful views across to the islands. Of course the weather whilst we were there was... More

Stayed one night - very disappointing. Didn't realise it had changed hands. I would agree with everyone else - rooms lovely, hotel lovely and location lovely - but the food, the wait for it, and just the severe lack of ambience about the hotel made it all feel a bit sad!

We stayed two nights at this hotel with superb views across to Gigha. It was an Amazon Local deal. The hotel has been recently refurbished to a high standard after changing hands, but sadly the staff, although willing and pleasant, are not trained. The food was indifferently cooked and service slow. Really the new owners need to get a properly... More

I've heard good things about this place last summer. We stopped by yesterday for some lunch. What a disaster. I ordered an egg mayo sandwich and my girlfriend a spicy broccoli soup. It took over 35 mins to arrive, there were only 3 other tables in. When the food came my bread was stale and egg mayo was warm. The... More

We had a two night break at this hotel. Our room had a wonderful sea view. The ensuite bedroom was very comfortable. The food in the restaurant was rather ordinary and the waiting staff seemed to lack experience. We did, however, enjoy our stay at this lovely location.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Putechan Hotel is a former Duke of Argyll’s hunting lodge dating from 1872. It lies on the western edge of Kintyre facing the dramatic Atlantic Ocean with stunning views of the Isles of Islay, Jura and Gigha, together with incredible sunsets. It is surrounded by rugged grounds with an amazing pebble beach, strewn with giant rocks for our customers to enjoy. Take a walk along the beach or perhaps a BBQ while looking out for the dolphins and minke whales. The hotel, now under new ownership, has been extensively refurbished and extended, and can now offer a variety of bedrooms to suit different tastes and pockets; from the bridal suite with roll-top window bath looking out to Jura and Islay and balcony facing the ocean, our 1st floor premier rooms with balconies, ground floor doubles with sea views and a linked disabled room. We can also offer more budget accommodation in our rear facing rooms and ‘bunk rooms’. We also have a fully refurbished and extended Venue catering for a variety of events from weddings (up to 120 seated). Attached to the south wing is the sensational ‘Rock Room’ with one whole wall formed by a massive rock with French doors to the rear and front with stunning views over the ocean. The room seats around twenty and could be used for meetings, smaller intimate weddings, yoga/fitness work-outs, business meetings, or an exhibition hall for local artists. Tell us what event you want to run and we will make sure it is one to remember. The south-facing courtyard is a natural sun-trap and looks over onto the private beach. With practically no light pollution, and clever outdoor lighting systems the Putechan enjoys fantastic stargazing on a cloudless night. ... more   less
