The Hostel is located just a few minutes away from the city centre and we found it quite quickly. It's a beautiful place with loads of little decorations which make the Hostel a comfortable place to stay in. Our room was a nice and clean four beds dorm. Steve had just baked fresh bread the other day and with free... More

Definitely my favourite hostel in Ireland so far. Very homely and quiet - which suited us for the night. Very modern kitchen, with a wonderful spread for breakfast in the morning, including delicious homemade bread. I also recommend doing the walking tour and visiting the Free Derry museum. Derry's both ancient and modern history is endlessly intriguing.

This was my favourite hostel on my ireland trip. Its small and has very friendly and accommodating owners. It has a real travellers ambiance. The hostel is decorated from top to bottom with travel souveniers that the owners have collected from their own years of travelling. I loved the little travel library where they have left their old lonely planet... More

This was one of my first hostels and I don't think I realized at the time how special it was. Cool concept, helpful staff happy to send you around the city in the day and share a drink at night, kitchen with all the mod-cons, and spacious dorms. The building was old but well-maintained, in a central location. I loved... More

Over 10 days a group of 8 other students, my professor, and I stayed in four hostels throughout ROI and Northen Ireland. Of the four this was the best! Steve made fresh bread for us every morning, and the continental breakfast included eggs for our use, cereal, breads and an assortment of jams. Other hostels only put out some stale... More

The hostel is spotless (including toilets/showers) and the kitchen is more than large enough for several people to use at once. The real highlight of my stay was the staff - if you're there before the end of this summer, make sure to ask Mirjam about her cycling adventures! She brought a bunch of us out to a local pub... This is the place to stay in Derry if you are coming here, centrally located and easy to find. The owner Steve is very friendly and welcoming, he keeps the place immaculate and in very good working order. It is also in the quiet area and free of any bad guys lingering after hours.

As far as hostels go, the Derry Independent was above average for me. Nice hangout area and eating area plus a self serve kitchen. Bathrooms and sheets were all clean. The building is a bit older so it's got its quirks, but the best thing about this hostel is the people! Fantastic and friendly staff who join in evening outings... More
