Ok, so either I pay £500 a night or go for a £80 a night feast of a hotel, with its own hot and cold water. A little bit seedy if i am honest, but remember where you are, and what you're here to do. Shout of England, beat the welsh, and enjoy a great game of rugby. Which it... More

We stayed here rather Cardiff for the rugby. It's a couple of Victorian houses next to each other . All good. Basic, but clean and comfy. Few minutes walk to the station and a couple of good pins nearby. Breakfast was surprisingly good. Good value, will use again.

DIRTY-RUN DOWN-NEVER AGAIN! This looked great in the adverts, on arrival things unfolded in a negative way! The reception was manned by a miserable man. The room we stayed in (No 20) was at the front of the property on the main road. We had to guess where it was as there are no directional signs or indication as to... More

Everyone should know that the Gateway Hotel is the same as the Gateway Express Hotel. I didn't know so when I arrived at the (closed) Gateway Hotel, I phoned the Gateway Express with whom I had a booking. I was told that the Gateway Express was 10 minutes walk further up Chepstow Road. Several phone calls and 1 ½ hours... More

On arriving at the hotel ( really a large guest house ) I wondered where I had booked myself into from the outside. Seems to be made up of a group of houses. However inside looks like it has been revamped very recently, reception, stairways, landings, and my room were all to a high standard. The room and bathroom were... More

Not sure if all the previous reviews are for the Gateway Hotel or Express. Flew into Bristol and then drove directly to Newport. Stayed for 1 night in Newport purely in order to renew my passport whilst visiting the UK. Booked a single room through booking.com. Paid €45. Some limited parking at rear of building. As mentioned before this is... More

The walls were dirty, there were holes in the wall, light fixtures hanging out....and the heating wasn't great. I asked for a refund as I wanted to get out of there and was told there would be no refunds for any reason. No one was to be found in reception for ages. The whole place is a bit run down.... More

Tiny rooms, broken shower, mini towels but room clean. Breakfast was very slow in the making, with a queue forming outside, food was not the best I've tasted. Young girl on reception was very good and seemed to be the only organised one there. Luckily went with a group of friends ather than family.

My first impressions of Newport weren't great, and I walked past a couple of pretty run-down B&Bs before reaching the Gateway. The man who opened the door seemed a bit sullen, but the woman handling check-in was most pleasant. The place had clearly been completely modernised and re-decorated, and I couldn't fault the room or facilities. The price I paid... More
