On arriving at the hotel ( really a large guest house ) I wondered where I had booked myself into from the outside. Seems to be made up of a group of houses. However inside looks like it has been revamped very recently, reception, stairways, landings, and my room were all to a high standard. The room and bathroom were... More

Not sure if all the previous reviews are for the Gateway Hotel or Express. Flew into Bristol and then drove directly to Newport. Stayed for 1 night in Newport purely in order to renew my passport whilst visiting the UK. Booked a single room through booking.com. Paid €45. Some limited parking at rear of building. As mentioned before this is... More

The walls were dirty, there were holes in the wall, light fixtures hanging out....and the heating wasn't great. I asked for a refund as I wanted to get out of there and was told there would be no refunds for any reason. No one was to be found in reception for ages. The whole place is a bit run down.... More

Tiny rooms, broken shower, mini towels but room clean. Breakfast was very slow in the making, with a queue forming outside, food was not the best I've tasted. Young girl on reception was very good and seemed to be the only organised one there. Luckily went with a group of friends ather than family.

My first impressions of Newport weren't great, and I walked past a couple of pretty run-down B&Bs before reaching the Gateway. The man who opened the door seemed a bit sullen, but the woman handling check-in was most pleasant. The place had clearly been completely modernised and re-decorated, and I couldn't fault the room or facilities. The price I paid... More

I needed to book somewhere for three adults to get their heads down for one night on Saturday 24th August 2013,the bank holiday weekend. Most places were booked up, but managed to find a family room at the Gateway for £69.99. Reception were helpful enough. Room was pleasant enough but a couple of bulbs did not work. The plain walls... Just stayed here for one night. Booked it through Booking.com, and felt the pics and descriptions were misleading. It is more like a large B&B , on a noisy main road. We were on the second floor room 10... Quite a trek if you had large bags, as no lift. Room was large and bedding clean. Bed comfort ok, but... More

had a so called family room, with a double and a single, very small room with plaster falling off the walls, non working lights, a shower that had very poor pressure and the showertray did not drain properly, the breakfast was largely inedible, a real ripoff at £130, avoid at all costs

I stayed in the Gateway for a visit to Cardiff with my parents for a 70th birthday. The walk to the train station was easy so the location was good. The receptionist was polite and we checked in easily. After that things went downhill! There was a rather damp smell to the hotel, my room had a funny smell to... More

I arrived late after a very long day and had to leave the hotel to eat but otherwise had a lovely quiet clean room with all necessary facilities left very early so I was unable to sample the breakfast but thanks fora good nights sleep
