A "Gold" standard premium room should be perfect - right? The view of the River Liffy was pleasant, the west-facing balcony and floor-to-ceiling lounge windows were a delight in the evening, the furniture was OK. 1 bed flat had large bedroom, en-suite and additional toilet. Location on a bus & taxi route between city centre and Cardiff Bay (15 minute walk) ideal and inside a gated community. But the room preparation was dreadful. Multiple light bulbs not working in almost every room; kitchen inventory lacking numerous items; unrepaired damage to a bedroom door. Balcony furniture dirty. To be fair, most items were put right next day, but I don't expect to have to spend my first hours in a premium-priced apartment cataloguing and communicating faults. And although faults were put right, my e-mail was never acknowledged or apology received to this day.

I've just come on to trip advisor to see what it was that made me have high hopes for these apartments when I booked it, I feel we had a slightly different experience to other reviewers!
The area of the apartments seemed quite rough, we chose to drive rather than walk into Cardiff or to the bay.
We had a one bedroom apartment, no.54, which wasn't really what we had hoped for.
The apartment itself was just very plain, no personal touches, none of the furniture matched or looked at all homely in the living room and the walls were bare. The balcony looked quite old and dirty and overlooked the car park and an enclosed walkway, hardly worth having the balcony there really.
When we called to meet the lady with the keys, I mentioned we would need a high chair. She was helpful and said she would sort one out for us after she let us into the apartment. While she was gone, I had to call her back to ask for a plug or basin for the kitchen sink as there was neither to be able to do any washing up. She was happy to look into it for us and came back with both a high chair and a basin. Although she did say she had just taken the high chair from the cupboard so it might need a wipe....
We struggled to find crockery or cutlery only to discover it was all in the dishwasher so the first thing we had to do was empty the dishwasher. Not really what you expect. A set of three saucepans had been left on the hob but the drawers and cupboards were empty of baking trays or casserole dishes to use in the oven. Slightly limiting us on what we could cook in a self catering apartment. There was also left over food (opened) in the freezer.
The bath was quite grimy and didn't look like it had been cleaned properly for a while and the shower head has seen better days.
The apartment was absolutely roasting when we arrived, we looked at the thermostat and it was set to 29 degrees! We struggled to get the apartment to cool down for the three days so it was uncomfortably warm.
I was charged an additional fee of £7.50 per day for parking which I felt should have been included and looking at other reviews looks like it is included for some.
The apartments are quite noisy, you can hear a lot coming from other apartments. This wasn't ideal at 2am on the Saturday night when a neighbour came home and decided to put on really loud music until 4am. This isn't something that can be helped but it's just a note that we didn't find it too quiet considering the pictures make it look like quite a posh complex.
We had to move the chest of drawers in the bedroom slightly to fit in our travel cot and there were used tissues underneath.
Perhaps this is a reserve apartment for busy times and we were the unlucky ones. Lack of personal touches, cranked up heating and few utensils suggest this to be a possibility.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. I was pleased to hear you had a good experience however was disappointed that you did not enjoy the location. We receive many positive comments with regards to the location of our apartments. All are located within walking distance to the town centre, local restaurants and bars. I do hope you will return in the future so that we can have the opportunity to deliver a much improved experience. Many thanks.

Arrived at the reception and was told to go to another office to pickup the keys for the apartment. Ended up having to walk to the other office with all our luggages and then having to wait another 30 mins for the host to arrive and give us the keys.
After entering the apartment, we asked to pay for a parking space (as was instructed in one of their emails) and we were told that parking was not available at the complex.
Upon giving all the necessary documentation including our identification documents, we were abruptly told to leave the apartment as we were under 25 years of age and the company policy states that the person renting the apartment has to be 25 years of age.
I admit that this was an honest mistake from our side, having not read this sentence (which was written at the end of the booking information using a barely readable font size). However my question remains, why accept booking and take payments 7 months before and yet not do proper verification from their side?
Given that this was a mistake from our side however, I accepted the consequences and requested the host to at least allow us to stay the night (as it was late in the evening). This request was declined and we ended up paying extra money to stay at another hotel which fortunately was very welcoming compared to our initial experience.
Never again!

The bed in the bedroom was a single bed and we have booked for 2 adults and 1 child 3 years old. It was impossible to sleep there. I slept on the sofa without blanket and I am 5 month pregnant and nobody from the stuff cared. We moved out after the first night. There was no refund or any sorry or anything. Even after the stuff didn't even write or ask us. They had their money and thats all the care about.

Thank you for providing your feedback. I was disappointed to hear your comments and have investigated them fully with the team. The booking that was placed with us was booked for two adults in a one bedroom apartment which had a double bed. Upon arrival it was identified that you had a child staying also. The team offered to set-up an extra bed in the apartment for the child however you declined. We did our upmost best to ensure you had a enjoyable stay however we were unable to totally rectify the problem faced.

Staff very helpful, Apartment awful! Dirty walls, chairs tatty/ripped, living room carpet stained, hairs on en-suit floor & tiles off wall, hole in wardrobe door, lampshades damaged, cheap bedding, pillows uncomfortable. Only stayed for two nights so put up with it but won't be returning.

I stayed here for my girlfriends birthday weekend. There had been a police incident before we arrived, and they didn't seem to let us know when we got there, and we wasn't even told why there was so many police in the building. Due to the incident we were disturbed by the police 4 times. I know that this is not their fault, but it would have been better to know, rather than knowing nothing. When I emailed A Space In The City about this they finally replied after 3 emails with a blunt and rude response.
Also be warned, they like to make you wait when checking into the building. we had to wait 25 minutes to get in.
The apartments themselves are not worth the money due to cold showers, awful heating, and not exactly clean.

The 2 bed apartment itself was fine - comfortable bed (but could do with blackout curtains in the bedrooms) and nice bathroom and en-suite. Quiet neighbourhood and 10 mins max walk to the Bay. Can't comment too much on the kitchen equipment as we only used the kettle and toaster. Fridge fine. We would have been happy to return if our stay had not been marred by a series of unfortunate events.
Firstly, this was not our first choice of apartment - we booked one in the Bay, with ASITC but were then asked 3 weeks later if we minded swapping to this one and we agreed as it had 2 beds and would be the same price. We also found it annoying that you have to pay extra to check in after 7pm. Surely 9pm would be reasonable and hospitable?
We did get there before 7pm (check in a bit of a faff as it will depend on how busy the rep is) but when shown to our flat, it obviously hadn't been cleaned, which the rep spotted straight away. No one wants to see the evidence of the last occupants. She was most apologetic and embarrassed and offered us another apartment to wait in whilst ours was cleaned which we declined as we had to go out promptly, so we left our belongings in the bedroom that had not been slept in. When we returned, the flat was immaculately clean and a bottle of wine and 2 bottles of lager had been left for us. Also she had left the correct password for the wifi as we had already found that the one on the router did not work. If the problems had ended here then I would not be writing this.
The next day we found a parking ticket on our car - we had paid £7.50 extra per night to park in the secure parking under the apartment block! We decided to ring ASITC the next day before we left to sort this out.
On the final day, I had gone to our car to put our belongings in, whilst my husband remained in the apartment, working on his laptop. There was a knock on the door - it was the cleaners, asking if we were ready to leave - it was 10.15 am and checkout is 11. Surely a quick look in the key deposit box would have answered that question. Were they the same crew who hadn't cleaned it 2 days previously? There is also a request to switch on the dishwasher before you leave to assist the timings for the cleaners - no tablets - no bin bags either - these should be provided/topped up.
I rang ASITC straight away to tell them about the parking ticket and the under/over zealous cleaners but no one in management was available to speak so I left my mobile number for them to ring, No one did. I did get an email saying the manager had gone home ill and could I get back to them. I emailed back. No reply. In the end, I rang from home the next day. The person I spoke to more or less accepted most of my complaints. He did say that the parking ticket fine was unenforceable, the cleaners knew better than to knock to see if guests were there, someone should have checked to see if the flat had been cleaned etc. At no point did he offer to refund some of the £240 + £15 for parking that we had paid out - it's not so much the money as the gesture that would have counted - I didn't ask but I felt it was his (lost) opportunity to make amends.
None of these problem should have occurred if basic checks had been done - bad management of what is a good flat in a handy location - it's a shame as the apartment would have got 4*. Our daughter lives in Cardiff. We would have returned.

Responded Jul 28, 2015
Hello Liz, Thank you for your feedback, as you have indicated there were a number of key issues with your stay which you have discussed with us directly. As outlined during our call with you we readily admit that mistakes were made and apologised for this. As discussed with you directly we have arranged for the parking ticket to be rescinded as this was issued against you in error by the parking firm that patrol the development and provided complimentary wine and other beverages as a gesture of goodwill for having to wait for the apartment to be cleaned. We do agree that your stay was impacted by the apartment not being ready, the parking ticket and then being interrupted by housekeeping when they should not have. I have also noted your additional points in this review about the missing dishwasher tablets and relayed additional instructions to our housekeeping department to ensure these items are not missed in future. Once again, we are sorry that the experience was not to your or our liking, however if you do wish to visit your family in Cardiff in future please contact us direct and we will look to ensure your expectations are met on a return stay.

I live in London but work in Newport so have been trying local hotels and serviced apartments as my Mon-Fri accommodation. Hotels in my price range are similar - comfy beds, clean linens but sometimes the rooms themselves aren't welcoming plus there is no kitchen. Serviced apartments vary massively in decor, comfort and condition. This group of places in particular has multiple personalities. I stayed here 3 weeks out of 4 and in those 3 weeks my emotional response to each allocated room went from surprise to 'Meh' through to disappointment.
I think many places pull the old "First time stay, give them a better apartment' trick but I went along with it for my first one. High floor, great views, spacious, well appointed - Bosch appliances - and quiet. The 2 bedrooms (even though I booked a 1 bed - you see what I mean?) had roman blinds that in the evening & morning summer sun proved worse that useless at keeping the room dark. You may as well have tissue paper up there. The beds themselves were kinda lumpy - at best medium thick mattress and worn out feeling springs. As someone who sleeps on their side, I didn't get one decent nights sleep throughout my stay. Very restless. I will commend the fact that the whole place was very clean which is the one saving grace.
My next stay was a different experience. A low floor apartment right opposite where everyone comes in/out of the accommodation wing. Not noisy but not quiet either. Low floor means anyone talking coming in/out of the apt. block gets their conversation really amplified / reflected off the tall buildings so seems loud. Opening the windows (as no apts have aircon) made the noise issue worse. Apartment still very clean but the beds were still kinda lumpy. Again, I didn't get one decent nights sleep throughout my stay. Still very restless.
My latest stay is in another building but was again on a low floor apartment with all the same issues as last week. Again, I didn't get one decent nights sleep throughout my stay. Now super restless and when driving back one Friday was almost asleep at the wheel
The very pleasant staff always seem in a hurry to just trot out the same lines in every interaction. If you complain, you are fobbed off with reasons why things cant be done with no "let me see what else I can do". Its not their fault though. All the rooms I stayed in felt like they have just gotten beyond that point where their newness and in-built reliability and quality has ended. To upkeep these premises would cost a lot so if they can avoid unnecessary expenditure, they will. Past its prime is a kind description.
I did feed back my experiences and made multiple simple requests asking them to consider my requirements when allocating my next room. They were all ignored and staff acted surprised when I told them that the rooms they were giving me were the exact opposite of what I had requested. When you live in hotels Mon-Fri you know what is reasonable, what can be achieved and what is expected. This place just failed to meet my criteria on multiple occasions. As such, I have actually decided to leave working in Newport and have taken another assignment closer to home so that I don't have to stay in this place again.

Our Studio flat was modern and clean , How ever.... The shower head was caked in lime scale which I had to dig off with a pair of kitchen scissors before use.
The oven pans were very greasy and kitchen utensils on top of the cooker hob covered in dust .
Worst of all the double bed had a large dip in the middle of the mattress where it was so old and uncomfortable that we were unable to get a single nights decent sleep all week long !
The bathroom and kitchen extractor fans were not working.
A young rep who knocked on our door to put up a new sign in one of the cupboards was very helpful and apologetic . 2 men came to have a look at the fans straight away , she also apologised for the state of the shower , we didn't mention about the bed as we were on our way out for the day at the time , That particular rep provided a good service was polite and professional .
Sadly the area was quite rundown in parts with a lot of young men hanging around drinking in groups .
We did not go out after dark as we did not feel safe during the day in some of the Cardiff Bay areas , The City center was great a though .
In future we plan to stay in either the city center or Penarth keeping well clear of the Bay area .

Thank you for your feedback. I was disappointed to hear the issues you have detailed and totally regret the frustation caused. Clearly further training is required witrh the team to ensure all apartments are fully inspected prior the guest arrival to ensure our high standards are maintained. I have instructed our Housekeeping Manager to complete a deep clean of this apartment and review the condition of the bed as a matter of urgency. It is never our intention for any guest to leave unhappy and I am sorry on this occasion this is the case.
