The graffiti-covered sign marking the entrance to the Surtees Hotel, visible from Dean Street, provides a string indication of the calibre of this establishment: it's the pits! The rooms are extremely basic, with very tired furnishings. Everything from the toilet to the ironing board is grim, but useable, just. On a positive note: the hotel is centrally located, with the... more

The hotel is much better than some of it's reviews. I was expecting the worse from some of the review from previous visitors. The reception and bar area are modern and welcoming. The rooms where basic but very clean and comfortable. We went in a party of 10 for a hen weekend and it was a mixed age group but... more

my husband and i have just returned from a 2 day stay in the Surtees Hotel in Newcastle, i stayed a here a few years ago and was impressed with the hotel, on returning i found that the outside was still the same (really does need improving) but inside was newly decorated, the hotel was spotless, the room was a... more

The hotel is a bit hard to find initially, as there is no sign at the front and it backs unto a multistory carpark. However on the plus side it was clean, very close to the city centre, nightlife, restaurants and not far from the quayside for a riverside drink or a nice walk. There is a small bar and... more

I had to go to newcastle on business at short notice and I knew this hotel once had a good reputation. "Had" is the operative word. On arrival I found one person in charge of the entire premises, a very polite and welcoming person. Unfortunately she was not able to deal with the various problems that unfolded. First, the room... more

This hotel could be a great one - if it wasn't located over a large disco - and if the owners reinvested the money on the infrastructure. It had a remodel a few years ago but now the televisions only show static, the windows and the curtains over them are falling apart, and the rooms though they are clean feel... more

We have just spent a weekend at the Surtees hotel and wanted to recommend this hotel to other young travelers. After reading the previous reviews i was not expecting great things but have been pleasantly surprised. First of all the hotel is on the main stretch and right in the middle of all the action for a perfect base for... more

An ideal location in the city centre but that's where the compliments end!! The room was very dated, the bed was very uncomfortable, toilet didn't flush for on average 30 attempts, the bathroom door lock was very inconsistent leading my wife to panic she was gonna be trapped, woke up in the middle of the night to find we had no electricity?? Oh and... more

On arrival at The Surtees you would be forgiven for turning around in the car park and leaving again, this hotel seriously lacks kerb appeal, however once you get in it does improve immensly, friendly receptionist with clear directions to rooms, breakfast times etc. Rooms are pretty standard if a little on the tired side but fab showers. This hotel... more

After trawling the internet for available rooms the Surtees was the only one with available rooms. Alarm bells should of rang then but me and my partner needed a room so booked in. Reading the directions supplied by the hotel website it sounded easy to find and in a very good location (which it is may i add), same cant... more
