Two nights at the Abbey Hotel, the buildings date back to 1390 and this is evident with exposed beams and low ceilings. A friendly welcome from Quentin who explained the history of the hotel. This is not a bland chain establishment, this hotel exudes character, family owned and run the Abbey is an ideal base for exploring East Anglia. If... More

We had walked past the Abbey Hotel a number of times when visiting family in Bury St. Edmunds, so it was the first place I looked when booking a hotel for a few days over my wife's birthday. After checking out the rooms on line, I booked St. Botolph's Cottage, Room 10. I knew that my wife would appreciate the... More

We paid £97 for a room that had only a hand held over bath shower! creaky wardrobe which kept flying open in the night! it was a workout and balancing act trying to get up to the room as staircase was so thin and narrow, and without carpet, we were very disappointed for the cost of the room.

If you are after modern boutique hotel, little bottles of fancy shampoos, then this isn't the place for you. If you want a comfortable bed, friendly service, and a great breakfast, all in a building (or buildings) oozing charm and character then this is the place for you. Ideally situated to explore Bury by foot, being only a short walk... More

A party of 29 of us booked exclusive use of the hotel for a family gathering over the Bury Xmas Fair weekend (end Nov/beg Dec) & it was perfect for our needs & we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The owner went out of his way to help in every way he could. The breakfasts were excellent, with plenty of food... More

Just a one night stay and we thought the building was lovely, the staff friendly and would have liked to have taken the bed home with me. The best nights sleep I have had in ages. The room was clean and the linen spotless. I had a lovely mirror for doing my makeup with a light over and a convenient... More

The building is full of old world character but if they are going to compete with the other facilities offered in Bury St Edmunds then they need to introduce some mod cons. Our bedroom was clean and comfortable but simple things like decent lighting and a well placed mirror would have made a difference. Missing light bulbs and a 'manually... More

We stayed at this lovely, charming place on 7th dec just for a night. Wanted to use the angel but that was full. What a lovely surprise. We were welcomed by the owner who is obviously proud of his hotel. The reception is in the hall but that is quaint and informal. We were in one of the rooms at... More

We've just returned from a night at the Abbey Hotel and what a very pleasant one it was. It has to be the quietest stay in a hotel with the comfiest bed I've had for years. I hate noisy rooms and almost without fail will be plagued by extract fans, plumbing, the neighbours, the lifts, etc. Its me being fussy,... More
