We have just returned from 3 nights at The Angel Hotel and were very pleased with the level of service and accommodation. Once we had been met by the very helpful gentleman who parked our car and carried our luggage to our room, we sat down in the lounge area for a meal of which the quality was excellent! We... More

We reserved for afternoon tea today . Shown to a dimly lit lounge more suitable for evening drinks rather than a spring afternoon Sunday Tea. The tea arrived and the scones and cream never came. We waited and waited and waited. Why not bring the tea with the scones? What is so difficult and challenging, surely this is a simple... More

We had an excellent room, number 21, although it would not be suitable for people who find stairs to the bathroom unsafe in the night! The two Portuguese gentlemen who look after our car on arrival and departure were top class as always. Very welcoming and accommodating and always smiling! It is a joy to arrive at the hotel. The... Just had a nice lunch in the restaurant: food okay serving staff not engaging, seemed bored. Reception staff were dreadful and very unhelpful. We're lead to believe that this was Bury St Edmunds best place to eat! Oh dear try others there staff may be more motivated.

The Ivy view room, called Graham Greene, could have been a lovely space but the decor and furniture were well past their prime and were not worth the London prices .Even the manager agreed the Ivy rooms all needed extensive refurbishment. The furniture was worn, wall paper pealing and paintwork chipped. The only concession we received was a bottle of... More

Who'd have thought that Under such a well known Part of town there was such an interesting bar downstairs! We were out for a leavers drink, but on a Sunday many places are shut, expecting just a drink in their lounge we were given the choice of lounge or downstairs (being pointed to a dark, fairy light lit stair case... The family stayed at this hotel for a long weekend in order to celebrate a significant birthday. The staff, especially the car parking guys were fantastic and very attentive. Our room at the front overlooked the Abbey Gate into the gardens. It was a suite type room with a sofa bed for our kiddie. Well equipped. What let the room... More

We stayed for 2 nights and found the staff very welcoming and helpful throughout. So nice to have the very friendly porter take your luggage to your room and park your car, gets your stay off to a good start. We had a lovely room (017) which is in the annexe at the front of the building, recently had a... More

Hotel itself is what I would call ostentatious in it's decor. Some of this works, i.e. the dining room with it's eclectic collection of art was excellent. The rest is all a bit too boutique for my taste. The Zebra skin covered chair next to the reception desk is both tasteless and offensive. Our room was clean, spacious and comfortable,... More

We have stayed here several times as family live in the area. Would normally recommend to others but not anymore!. First room offered was ground floor facing the car park. curtain was off the track, hole in wall where tieback had been. Moved to courtyard room to find there were no drawers to put clothes in, sink had no plug... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
This Georgian ivy clad 4 star boutique hotel and restaurant in Suffolk surprises with a twist of urban chic. Our Suffolk hotel is right in the centre of Bury St Edmunds town centre and everything is just a step from here. Explore winding, cobbled, shop filled streets and a plethora of ancient architecture on the doorstep.Once inside, the Angel Hotel is a curious contrast of comfy contemporary design with touches of exotic grandeur. Warm leather sofas vie for your company in the lounge, which is filled with curiosities, pop art, eccentric oddities and cool vintage furniture. It is a hotel of many different aspects all artfully blended together into an exciting package and the bedrooms are no exception. The restaurant has a great reputation and dining here is a culinary treat. In 2012, the hotel opened our new Wingspan bar. Decadently curious and located in the 12th Century vault under the hotel, Wingspan is the perfect location to meet with friends, for pre-dinner drinks, or simply to relax after a long day. ... more   less
