We had a one night stay in room 7 which is on the very top floor. The receptionist was very friendly and down to earth. The room was small and cosy and had a lovely view of the cathedral which was beautiful at night and equally pretty in the morning. The room had a small en-suite which was adequate. The... More

Very friendly hotel, excellent food, (Italian restaurant on site) comfortable rooms with lots of character. The hi light though has to be the amazing view of the cathedral from your bedroom window, absolutely stunning! Situated just off of the main walkway to the cathedral along a flower filled display of hanging baskets and amazing cobbled streets, breathtaking!

Having read other reviews we were pleased to get the bedroom above the gate house.I have two replacement hips and a replacement knee but managed the unusual stair way with ease.reception lady very friendly and informative especially with car parks. My wife and I had a meal in the Italian Restaurant on site and it was superb.Breakfast at the hotel across... We arrive and were given the key to a room on the top floor. Unfortunately the last flight of stairs frightened me so much (personal fear of steep steps) that we went down to see if we could change rooms. They could not have been more helpful and moved us to the one in the picture above. The view was... More

Very old coaching inn, quirky rooms but very clean and individual. Staff were excellent always friendly and helpful. Hotel restaurant was up there with the best at very reasonable price, Italian cuisine, great service and did not have to wait long for food - would highly recommend. Downside, as with anywhere in Wells, is the car parking - we were... More

This really is the ancient gatehouse, which makes it a great location if you're visiting Wells cathedral, but it does come with some drawbacks. It has windy stairs and narrow corridors, all very charming, but it's definitely in need of an upgrade. We had a room at the front, so no cathedral view, and on a Saturday night, inevitably noisy,... Right in front of the cathedral, beautiful location, rooms a tiny bit basic & in need of a bit of a refurb, four poster room is on the front - no cathedral view, but a nice room, with a rather small bed. i'm not the tallest & my ankles were out of the bed. however a pleasant stay nice staff... We stayed here for a weekend in mid March. I should have known that the clue was in the name of the hotel - ancient! There are not too many hotel choices in Wells, and the Ancient Gatehouse is really well located next to the Cathedral Green. parking at night wasn't a problem as you could park on the Cathedral... What do you expect? You may be looking at a 13thCentury building so don’t expect a lift for a start. People were short and also poor in those times so ceilings may be low, staircases will be steep, room will be at a premium. Facilitates we take for granted, like a bathroom, running water and so on have been added... More

Stayed for just one night and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff on check-in were very helpful. This is not a hotel for anyone with mobility issues but that didn't affect us so the quirky stairs and corridors added to the charm. Our room had a stunning view over Cathedral Green and the cathedral itself. The bed was very comfortable,... More
