Visited this hotel for one night in December 2014. Pluses: pleasant staff - great outlook over Cathedral Green from our room - good breakfast - very convenient for city centre. Minuses: mattress obviously elderly and not very comfortable - some less visible areas of room (and bathroom) in need of cleaning. Bathroom very sadly lacking. Paint peeling from walls -... More

Lovely refurbished room overlooking Sadler Street which was great for us because we were in Wells for the carnival. Great comfortble four poster bed. Very nicely decorated. the bathroom was average with only a shower. We opened the sash window and watched the carnival from the comfort of a nicely upholstered window seat with a glass or two. Breakfast in... More

We planned this night away at the last minute. The hotel is small and basic but has everything you need, is clean and comfortable. We had a four poster bed which was fantastic. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The hotel has a restaurant but we chose to eat out, We were expecting a room looking over the green... More

Good things: Splendid location & friendly staff, especially the lady on reception when I checked in. Breakfast was OK, nothing special, buffet "choice" is barely worth the name. Not good things: Splendid view of the Cathedral from my room obscured by blinds over the window, which could not be adjusted. I spoke to manager about this & suggested the blinds... More

My wife and I booked two nights at this hotel as a 'special' deal. After struggling up to our room, it didn't take long to decide we wouldn't be staying. I understand the building is old and that nothing can be done about the narrow difficult stairs or the small room or the lack of air conditioning or the Cathedral... More

A very very old building but comfortable. We had a four poster bed which was very comfy. Shower but no bath. Breakfast was in the sister hotel opposite. Breakfast was hot and fresh and the breakfast staff were lovely and very helpful. Overlooking the cathedral and close to the centre but quiet too. Very impressed for the price. Has its... More

We picked this hotel for its location and were very disappointed with the quality of the actual accommodation. There are certain characteristics that you expect from a building of this age, so the staircases, uneven floors and windy staircases were to be expected. The location was, as other reviews say, stunning, and apart from the lack of parking (which we... More

Don't be persuaded by the comfortable looking room on the hotel's website. We took a cue from this and from our past experience of this hotel when we booked a stay . The place is neglected, dirty and there are access issues if you are unlucky enough to be allocated a room at the top of the steep stone staircase.The... More

Yes, the views across to Wells cathedral are incredible. But we still left a day earlier than planned because this place was just unbearable. We had three rooms upstairs, and the tiny steep staircase reeks so that you gag as you ascend to your room. The rooms are not air conditioned and there's no fan, but if you open the... More

It's a shame you did not enjoy your stay. You stayed during one of the hottest weeks of the year, and the hotel does not have air conditioning as it is 900 years old. Fans were provided to every room. If the windows are open then maybe the occasional insect may fly in, but they are not bugs. We can... More

If you're traveling in the region of the Salisbury Plain [Stonehenge, Bath, Salisbury, Wells, or up to Bristol, etc] right in the middle of Wells you'll find the Ancient Gate House Inn. You can climb a stone, circular stairway up to your room - some of which are overlooking the close and west front facasde of Wells Cathedral, and allow... More
