Several reviews have berated this hotel. Of those most complained about the rooms or service. My wife and I stayed for one night only,it was fantastic. The room was at the front and it had great character, comfortable bed, wall mounted LCD TV and more than adequate bathroom. Nice extra touches, bathrobe, slippers and extra toiletries that one would only... more

Had a very good weekend in a really comfortable warm and friendly hotel.Breakfast and dinner as good as it gets .Room was very well furnished and quiet even the though it faced the main street. Shower a bit iffy but not the end of the world. more

I bring groups to this hotel fairly regularly during the year - and choose the hotel largely because of its great character and wonderful location in the centre of the town - walkable from the station as well. The rooms are fine with all the usual amenities (tea and coffee and so on) and the lobby is great - with... more

Stopped for just a night at the Lion having booked over the internet. Arrived late and welcomed by name (last guest in I guess) by helpful receptionist. Asked question about a local business's location that I was visiting following day and the owner Mr Astbury magicked a map and gave me nice easy directions for a five minute journey and... more

My experience of the hotel was very dissapointing. My room was a small very basic single which backed on to a large fan which was extremely noisy. The bathroom was tired with a dribble of a shower. Not a room you would want to spend any time in. I was amazed at the poor service we experienced in the restaurant.... more

The Lion is not without its problems - sometimes very awkward parking, and noise in some rooms - but the building is comfortable and full of character, the staff lovely and the food absolutely excellent - far better than most of the other heritage hotels. Will be visiting again before too long I hope more

Stayed here for two nights and had to change rooms because of the noise. Some rooms overlook a very noisy bar with Kareoke going on until midnight. Because it's a listed building I assume they can't put in double glazing to cut the noise down. Moved to a room a the front of the Hotel which was still noisy but... more

If you want a quiet room, just ask for one. I did, and had no problem. True, I had a view of a brick wall, but to me that was an acceptable trade. Nice hotel. more

This Hotel had friendly staff. Now the bad bits. The toilet in the first room didn't flush. Disgusting! They sent a cleaner up to fiddle with it and after a while she managed to coax a reluctant gurgle from it. On our return to the room later that might, again the toilet wouldn't flush. We asked for another rom and... more

Having booked the hotel over the internet I was slightly concerned about some of the negative comments appearing on certain review sites. However the hotel has evidently changed hands 3 years ago, is now privately owned and really seems to care about service and standards. My room was pleasant and clean, staff were friendly and helpful througout, from check-in to... more
