I arrived at this hotel and was greeted by what h can only describe as a vacant human sitting behind reception. There was no personal greeting or offer of any smile. Anyway not to be put off I was handed my door card and made my way through the damp smelling reception area and lift to my room that was... More

Old hotel dating back to the 17th century, Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens both dined here (Darwin was born in Shrewsbury), very comfortable lounge/bar area in which to enjoy a cold pint. Rooms are as you would expect in an old hotel, creaking floorboards and while there is a lift you cannot completely avoid stairs. Good sized room with a... More

Dined in the Hayward restaurant in The Lion Hotel mid week. It was quiet that night but who cares the food and wine was excellent and I will definitely be going back again! Highly recommend the Scallops and Lamb dish! Many thanks Hayward Restaurant!!!

Stayed for just short of two weeks on business. Single rooms are small floors creak and the noise from the neighbouring establishments mean your chances of sleep are minimal. The lift makes some rooms vibrate and although turned off at night that means you have to climb the stairs. Breakfast asked for just bacon and egg and got one piece... More

Beautiful hotel, we found our room was clean, spacious and traditional. The Staff were friendly and professional and we enjoyed having a drink in the bar. The breakfast was lovely and we were seated and served immediately. We were in room 102 and was awake nearly all night due to the creaking floorboards above us every hour or so. This was... More

Last stayed here in June 2012... changes ...hotel is being run by administrators. Did not like the fact that you now have to pay to park your car in the guest car park and all the stock in the second bar has now been removed giving it a slightly unloved ambience. Stayed in room 215 at side of hotel -... More

Great location, not amongst all the shops so doesn't get overly busy. Room standard was awesome, large beds, high ceilings and a real authentic feel to the old style inn that it is. Easy enough to find, parking is quite tight though. Food service was of a high standard. Large areas to relax had a real log fire burning most... More

I know this hotel is 16th century, but you would have thought that they would have at least try and breathe some new life into the old place. The floorboards were extremely creaky (which some may find quirky) but they kept me awake when the visitors above decided it was time to get up at 6am every morning !!!!! The... More

Lovely comfortable room, clean and welcoming. Food in the bar was great and reasonably priced. Only downsides were noise outside past midnight and at about 5.30am - the latter sounded like a refuse collection. Net curtains were a little grubby and the plumbing was ancient - but everything else good enough to warrant a recommendation. I asked for a portable... More

The hotel is very close to the town centre and was god value for money with convenient parking at an extra £5 (half the normal price for the carpark). The Hotel looked tired, I think it still had the original lift! All that said the room was very clean and the bed was comfortable and was value for the price.
