We booked a weekend away in Shrewsbury as a special treat for my husbands birthday and booked a double room at the Lion hotel. I telephoned the hotel 3 days before to request a room at the front of the hotel as I had read reviews on tripadvisor that a pub/nightclub at the back was troublesome. Surprise surprise we got... We love the Lion hotel, we stay here often but confess this time we noticed some real frays round the edges. Firstly, staff are great, friendly and attentive. Food is good as is the breakfast. The Hotel was once (in my day) the place to go in Shrewsbury, marvellous function rooms and historical decor.... It's still there if not just... More

the Lion is such a landmark Hotel but it has lost its way a bit. I agree with some of the reviews that the location is stunning although the revellers down the street are a worry. This could be made better with some sound proofing. The whole place is badly in need of some TLC everything has become very tatty:... More

Room was clean but cluttered. Mattress needs replacing - stabbed by a spring everytime I rolled over. Although we were on the top floor we were woken at 2am by revellers from nearby pub/club (friday night) . The location is great and parking is available behind the hotel for £5. Good continental breakfast buffet and choice of cooked breakfast served... More

This institution is showing its age. Windows are drafty, the furnishings intone halls are a bit tatty and the bathroom has a hospital look about it. But it's a great location, on a beautiful old street lined with interesting shops, pubs and eateries. The bar is nice and the imposing log fire that greets you is as impressive now as... More

Went here for girls afternoon tea, nice surroundings, however the afternoon tea package needs urgent attention to detail. Sandwiches were tasteless with dry bread, not given a choice of white/brown/granery bread. Scones arrived very hot as the cream melted whilst spreading. Cream was supposed to be clotted, but very doubtful as was very sweet. Plates we were given did not... More

The hotel seemed a bit tired. Our room was spacious but the bathroom has definitely seen better days. Comfy bed. Nice atmosphere to the place. Breakfast was adequate. Shrewsbury itself is a little gem. I will definitely return, but I will try another hotel as there's plenty to choose from. Parking cost £5.00.

Stayed here for one night for a Chelsea match (need a taxi to get to the ground). Excellent room and good breakfast. Staff very helpful and would recommend it. A hotel which is full of history. Reasonable price.

I arrived at this hotel and was greeted by what h can only describe as a vacant human sitting behind reception. There was no personal greeting or offer of any smile. Anyway not to be put off I was handed my door card and made my way through the damp smelling reception area and lift to my room that was... More

Old hotel dating back to the 17th century, Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens both dined here (Darwin was born in Shrewsbury), very comfortable lounge/bar area in which to enjoy a cold pint. Rooms are as you would expect in an old hotel, creaking floorboards and while there is a lift you cannot completely avoid stairs. Good sized room with a... More
