Without a doubt the worst hotel I have evr stayed in and that includes guest houses in South East Asia. The rooms had a strange smell, no lifts, very noisy - I could hear everything in adjoining rooms, the bed shuddered when someone walked by in the hallway. I had enough and changed my room at 1am, the porter didn't... more

Never again! This is the worst hotel I have stayed in since starting my job which involves 2 or 3 nights away a week. As a single woman, who smokes, I was left to clamber up innumerable stairs with laptop and suitcase with no offer of assistance to the worst room I have ever been in - it was disgusting... more

Stayed at this hotel for one night. Initially staff were nice and friendly, room was acceptable and well equipped with hairdryer, iron etc. although no lift to upper floors. Coming back late however we asked about takeaway food nearby and the male receptionist insisted on ordering pizza on the phone for us and told us we could only have more... more

I ended up at the Royal County as could not get into Malmaison, Ibis, Novotel, etc. The location is very central, but that's about all it has going for it. The original room we were shown to was a very cramped twin. As soon as you walked in you were hit with an overpowering smell of stale curry. The hotel... more

We had originally booked to stay at The George Hotel up the road which is the sister hotel to the Royal County, however after reading the reviews on TripAdvisor we were reluctent to go ahead with our stay. The George Hotel told us we could park our car at the Royal County so after driving round the one way system... more

Somehow I liked the hotel, even with its faults. It's your typical old english hotel building, squeaky floors, stairs, carpets, no elevators etc. I had a second floor room, nice and clean although little small. Things I liked: - Staff was friendly and helpful - excellent location - nice bathroom and good shower (real treat in UK) Things I didn't... more

The hotel wasn't cheap, but I didn't expect the following: Wallpaper peeling off the walls Extractor fan doesn't work Yellow water from the taps No shampoo or soap Only one power socket in the room out of site under the desk Dissapointing features: Breakfast is a joke, warm butter, very poor buffet No spy hole in the room door Small... more

Stayed here 2 nights for work & booked by work. Just finding the place was not easy unless you know Reading well. Arrived and check in was fine, room was on the 2nd Floor and there is no lift, although I was offered help with my luggage. It is worth noting this hotel is not suitable for those with a... more

The booking was made through the company travel department for a single Sunday night in November. The hotel is on Duke St - just on the corner with King St. At 9pm, on a dark and rainy night, it's very easy to miss the unlit sign low on the wall. As Duke St is one-way, this meant a drive round... more
