I would not call this a hotel. More a up market hostel - steep stairs to the reception, and there is a definite smell of mould The room I had was at least large, but very shabby. Breakfast was good, and it is very central however be warned, do not drive and try and park. It is almost impossible to... More

I stayed at The Buttery for one night this week. The location of the Hotel is very central and only a five minute walk from the train station. My room (203) was ample in size and had a recently-fitted bathroom. All room facilities were entirely adequate. The staff were very helpful and the breakfast (served in the café downstairs) was... We wanted somewhere central for our weekend trip to Oxford. We parked at Redbridge Park and ride and it was under £5 to leave the car for the weekend. Hotel is situated above the cafe so there are stairs up to reception. the girls on reception were very friendly and welcoming. As it is an old building so we weren't... More

The location of this hotel cannot be beaten. It's right in the city centre, close to the shops, the covered market, the university and the buses. You can even walk from the station if you don't have too much luggage (about 20 minutes) Rooms are basic but clean and comfortable. At GBP 95 a night it really is great value.... More

Location, Location, Location! On these criteria The Buttery is as good as any hotel in Oxford being located as it is on the Broad directly opposite Balliol College. Moreover, the price is relatively reasonable by Oxford's inflated standards. The standard double room was not large but was certainly adequate with a comfortable bed, rather small flat screen TV although no... More

Spent 1 night at this lovely hotel in a room that overlooked Balliol College and couldn't have been better located for a visit that included trips to many of Oxford's colleges. The staff were friendly and helpful, happily storing my bag when I arrived early and letting me pick it up later in the day after I had checked out.... More

Very basic hotel that sits above the cafe owned by the hotel. Fitting clean but with scars of previous refurbishment. Breakfast is continental - cooked extra but not up front explained. Generally service and approach lacks finesse e.g. Card machine not working.

Lovely room, lovely view out onto the old cobbled streets & directly opposite the university. Great breakfast the following morning, downstairs in the adjoining cafe. Literally minutes walk from the theatre, where we went to see Brendan Cole's show. Would definitely go back there again!

This hotel is in a superb location minutes walk from restaurants, bars, attractions & shopping. There is also a stop for the Hop on/off tour bus further down the street. The staff were very courteous and helpful. The room was clean and adequate for a 1 night stay but was small, as was the bathroom, so you may struggle if... More

I can only think that the guests who’ve written positively about this hotel must have been taken in by its quaintness and good location. I had a tiny single room: bed with a cheap sagging mattress, nowhere to sit, washbasin so tiny that it served little purpose other than cleaning teeth, miniscule wardrobe and no chest of drawers. And that's... More

Oh dear you certainly didn't enjoy your stay here which is disappointing as we always want guests to leave happy with their stay. Our single room is a very compact room which we consider is reflected in the price we charge for a night in central Oxford. It is the smallest room at The Buttery. All our larger rooms are... More
