We stayed at The Red Lion on the strength of several reviews which we read on Trip Advisor. We thoroughly enjoyed the ambience in the Bar but the most outstanding feature (and we really did not expect this even after reading the reviews) was The Food!! This was excellent and certainly not your average pub food. We both chose the... More

Booked 2 rooms to stay for 3 nights following reading reviews. We weren't disappointed, Sue, Andy and the team were great, made us feel really at home. Rooms were very comfortable and clean. Food was excellent with a great choice to choose from. Would definitely recommend and worth staying and eating. A great base with loads of places to visit... More

We were staying in the area recently in a rented cottage, and were recommended this pub for an evening meal. We were not disappointed. The menu was varied, the meal was excellent and the staff who served were extremely friendly and helpful. The pub is very attractive, full of character and cosy too.. It's a tiny village and very peaceful,... More

Just got back from spending 3 nights at the Red Lion with my wife. We were a wee bit apprehensive about staying in a pub with 4 rooms but from the very moment we arrived we fell in love with the place. It was originally built in 1190 so it's the oldest building we have ever stayed in. The Red... More

The Red Lion is the perfect B&B from which to explore the Tyne Valley and beyond. Stanegate is a beautiful village and the Red Lion benefits from very friendly but not overbearing staff and locals. Though a pub, it was quiet at night - apart from the sheep baaing! Of particular note is the fabulous food which is especially good... More

We are fussy customers, but after reading the reviews we knew we were onto a winner. Rooms very clean, shower was fantastic, bed was really clean and comfy. We took our little dog, and the place was so clean I left a doggy towel in the entrance hall, and cleaned his feet before I took him into the room everytime... More

Comfortable, great atmosphere, delicious, freshly cooked food in this carefully restored pub in a quite village. The Theakston's bitter is truly wonderful. Locals very helpful and friendly. My room was freshly decorated with a newly fitted en-suite with a terrific shower.Wifi was available but I couldn't get a signal on my mobile and the village doesn't not have a public phone box.... We were taken to the Red Lion by friends for evening dinner and what a treat! It's a lovely village pub with excellent real ales (Theakston Best Bitter to die for) and a good selection of starters, mains and desserts at reasonable prices. I had the lamb hotpot which was sublime, others had the catch of the day which was... More
