Stayed one night while on a walking holiday. Room was spacious and comfortable and everything worked. Although clean, our room was finished in a rather unattractive shade of brown which it is difficult to believe anyone actually chose. The hotel doesn't promote its restaurant very well. We had to ask if it was open and then were the only diners.... More

I stayed one night at this pub/hotel, The food is outstanding and the breakfast execellent. The room was clean and well heated. There are thousands of Chicken ornaments and chicken artwork all over the reception and sitting area. Ask the owners to tell you why?. If you are looking for a real bargain overnight hotel cost, and great food, then... More

We went to Hexham due to a family bereavement and The County was booked by a third party. The whole place was very dreary and dingy and extremely cluttered. The first night we came back to the hotel at 10.40 to find ourselves locked out and the place in darkness! The televisions did not work, one room had no hot... More

Hallways and stairs are narrow and winding, which would have been fine but they were also dim and the carpet was severely worn. A cupboard had been removed from one hallway with apparently no attempt to repair the wall or even clean up afterward. The room was very dim, with a dusty spiderweb hanging from the overhead light fixture and... More

The hotel was a little jam-packed with ornaments and plates and pictures etc which gave it an old fashioned feel. The room was a good size, although the bed a little hard and short! My boyfriend is under six feet tall and struggled to sleep comfortably. The breakfast was of decent quality although, if more than a couple of tables... More

Stayed for 1 night on bed & breakfast. Rooms were on the small side but had everything you need and was fine for 1 night. Brakfast was very good and plenty of it. We didn't eat in the restaurant in the evening but wish we had, it looked good and people coming out praised it. The owners are very friendly... More

Yes, the hotel could do with a refurb, but understand this would be very costly. My room was very large and clean. Quite old-fashioned place but the owners were very sweet and prepared a nice breakfast. The ceramic chickens were a sight to behold, but I don't mind a little eccentricity. Had a good, comfortable night's sleep. Liked the attached... More

We stayed there for three nights after staying at the Radisson in Durham. The contrast couldn't have been greater – none of the slick, impersonal “have a nice day” false bonhomie of the chain hotel. The County Hotel hotel is the exact opposite. It's quirky, old fashioned and quaint. I rather liked the hundreds (possibly thousands) of chickens that adorned... More

My partner and i stayed at the County Hotel last night. I was a little wary due to the reviews i had read on here, however we found the hotel to be really friendly, welcoming and nothing was to much trouble. We asked if it was possible to take a bottle of champayne to the room after the bar closed, which was... More

Arrived late (my fault), nothing to much trouble for the host and hostess who got me settled in with a minimum of fuss. Clean and nicely presented room with a substantial well prepared breakfast next morning . Uniquely different ornaments and a sense of humour what more do you want?
