We've stopped here 3 times and Di treats us as old friends rather than paying guests. The Alternative B&B is really homely. We had an excellent breakfast. Impressed by the commitment to being environmentalally friendly. We would stay nowhere else in York.

I stayed at Di's place for 3 nights with my boyfriend and had a wonderful time. Di and her partner Paul are lovely, interesting and genuine people, and Hoover the cat was very cute and friendly. I chose Di's place because I'm vegan, and was not disappointed by her lovely vegan breakfasts and cruelty-free toiletries. The room was very comfy,... More

It really is different from the norm. A friendly and homely welcome with an atmosphere that makes you feel as if you come to visit mum for a few nights, not paying to stay in a stranger's house. Comfortable room, lovely breakfast with home-made jams and honey from a beekeeper friend. Di is a vegetarian, but her sausages and bacon... More

The Alternative B&B is unlike any pay-to-stay place I've been to, I really feel like I'm staying with an aunt or cousin. Many b&b's I've stayed in are either nervy, overly familiar that can come over as a bit fake or just to business.. room / breakfast/ pay and done etc. which is fine mostly as I tend to get... More

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. My husband, fifteen-year old daughter, and me stayed here for one night. It was very close to the city centre. We were the only guests there as they only have two rooms and one bath. We chose pancakes with fruit for breakfast and basically got crepes. Di makes her own bread and jellies and... More

I'd thoroughly recommend staying here. Don't worry about the fact that you're sharing a bathroom and that the individual rooms don't have locks. We left all of our stuff there and didn't have any problems whatsoever, and as another reviewer said the bathroom is kept spotless. We were very pleasantly surprised by Di and Paul's guest house. As soon as... More

Advantages: Reasonable price, no extra charge for singles, all diets catered for and a relaxed place to stay. Disadvantages: Not easy to tell it's a B&B from the road and no on-suite bathrooms (didn't bother me!). When I decided I wanted to stay in a bed and breakfast in York the first thing I did was a Google search for... More

An absolutely brilliant little B+B nestled on a side street a short walk from the train station and the city centre. Perfect for those of you who want to avoid the boring same-old-chain-hotels but still have clean, comfortable accommodation. No additional supplement for single travellers also a huge bonus, considering the value for money on offer for a room. Breakfast... More

Am so glad to see that this great B&B has found it's way on to Tripadvisor. I found York Alternative B&B after much searching on the internet for a reasonable priced place to stay in York. It is only 10 minutes walk from the train station. The rooms are lovely and spacious and although I was, at first, extremely worried... More

This B&B (found via recommendation on tripadvisor) lived up to the reviews and to the description on their website: friendly, welcoming, comfortable. The breakfast is great, menu supplied and choices made the day before catering for a good range of organic food and special diets. The owner is very accommodating - no problems about leaving bags there both before actual... More
