My son and I stayed at the Gillygate this week before attending the York Uni open day. We had booked a twin room but when we arrived were allocated a newly refurbished and very smart double room each! The location is great - just a few minutes walk to the Minster, city wall, shops and restaurants. Breakfast was good -... More

Really happy to talk to the enthusiastic chef and try the new menu today. Amazing pie, best I can think of and super day fresh fish & chips. So happy to see such a great pub with decent ale and food and decor. If you haven't been in yet, give it a try. Well done Brian & Suzi (and chef,... More

York seems to be the "must go to" place as the moment and the pub companies have responded. There have been 3 major pub renovations in the last month alone and The Gillygate is one of them. The old place was symptomatic of many pubco places at the moment that were undervalued and suffer from a lack of investment. It... More

Last week whilst in York myself and husband went to the Gillygate for liquid refreshment. Staff were very pleasant, as was the Thatchers cider!! Beer garden well laid out but would look better with decent parasols and not "pub brand" ones. Food menu looked and priced good but did not have time to sample. Would recommend.

The Gillygate has just re-opened, following an extensive refurbishment and I had the pleasure of staying in one of the newly appointed rooms. If you are visiting York then I would highly recommend staying at The Gillygate. Why? - Fabulous location, just behind York Minster with views of the Minster and the City Walls. - Private Car Park if you... More

We were not expecting much reading previous comments but what a surprise to arrive on the 20th June to see that the whole place been renovated! Everything is brand new, the room I stayed has new TV, a comfortable couch, spanking new bathroom. I would have loved to stay for another 2 more nights but had to move on. The... More

Forget all previous reviews of this place - from today, 20th June, there's nothing left of the old place - and that's a real plus... The bar is new, the 2 lounges are totally new, the beer garden is new and there's 8 new bedrooms totally renovated. I walked in the pub with my wife and we thought we had... More

The staff were very welcoming and friendly but the pub and bedrooms were very tired , the Decore was dated , the bathroom was horrible , Lino was old , tiles with mould on grout , shower wasn't very powerful and made a noise , when you flushed toilet sounded like was gonna drop through floor . The best bit... More

We stayed for one night 12.4.2014. The pub itself is cosy and welcoming with very friendly staff. The breakfast was delicious!! The room as mentioned in other reviews had décor from the 1970's including the hairdryer! The en-suite was full of mould with no window or extractor fan. However the bedding & towels were crisp and clean. Location is perfect.... More

The owner Brian was friendly, the other staff were nice, the location was excellent and the breakfast was lovely. Free parking was a big bonus and the room was a good size. If you are a light sleeper be aware that some of the rooms overlook the main road. This isnt the most romantic or fancy place to stay but... More
