Good location close to town. Lovely staff. Main building beautiful. Big roaring fire and lots of lovely original features. Room was in courtyard at back. OK for what we paid but not very clean. Room felt grubby and when we checked it was pretty filthy. Layers of dust on lights and tops of pictures. Found a piece of electric wire... More

I have stayed at the Elmbank before, and were quite pleased. I had no problem booking a room for a second stay. The first time, I stayed in room 216 which was worn, but cosy. This room had no internet access. This time, I was given room 101. It was big, but very worn and smelt bad. The bathroom had... More

A Victorian building in a pleasant residential district of York, within easy walking distance of the railway station and the historical centre. My room, in the "lodge" across the street from the main building, was tiny but comfortable and well appointed (opening the window was not easy, though). Fairly efficient free wifi. Very good English breakfast (not included in room... More

A lovely hotel with stunning decor. Made to feel very welcome. Food available but I didn't have any but a friend did and said it was delicious. Room quite basic but clean. Perfect if like me used it for our girlie trip to York. Easy walking distance into town centre

First of all don't believe hotels.com reviews. I stayed here last Saturday and wrote a below average review which has not been published. Maybe they filter what they don't like and keep the good ones which is why their averages are higher than on here. I requested to be able to book in an hour earlier through hotels.com. This was... Stayed here for 1 night 8th october. The hotel was lovely with lots of character. Staff were brilliant. Thank you. Rooms were spacious and warm, with ample tea and coffee. Bar was cosy. The lounge area had lots of seating around a lovely open fire. All in all, i would recomend this hotel. Sue Clifford, Middlesbrough.

Stayed here for two nights. I too stayed in the lodge. My room was tiny with stains on the floor and walls and a deff. Smell of gas....the breakfast was a lukewarm buffet. Where the waiter would come in abd shovel around the scrambled eggs..says it all. Deffinitely not worth £43 pn. My tip: avoid: move a little closer to... More

I am not sure why this hotel is ranked so low and I am pleased that we ignored the negative reviews and booked for a 2 night stay. If you want to stay in a bland shiny chain then that's what you should go for - this is a beautiful old building with character. We had booked two double rooms... More

Stayed here last Friday with the Mrs (who booked it....) Had a room across the road from the main hotel, in the lodge building. It's hard to explain what's actually going on with this place because it's got potential. The room was huge, fitted with a standard double bed, wardrobe and a sofa. Talk about spare floor space. Wish we'd... More
