I didn't actually manage to stay here, despite making a booking a couple of months beforehand! We ended up cancelling our entire weekend to York thanks to the mismanagement of this hostel. Two weeks before we were due to stay I received a number of missed calls from the hostel (returning the calls and playing cat and mouse trying to... More

This affordable hostel was clean, not too noisy or busy and had a free breakfast of fresh croissants, juice, instant coffee, cereals etc. If you're on a budget, this is great value for money and it's fun to go on a trail of the building, reading the history of each room. There's also a games room and a large telly... More

Nowhere to park, sent upstairs to my room, was told 'bed 3'.. Went to bed 3 (this is after I has to take my car miles down the road to park it) laid down and got on with some uni work.. went to sleep, woke up to some woman turning the light on saying she's in my bed..turned round, and... More

Stayed here in Nov 2013 as a last minute resort after winning a competition to attend a special event in York city centre. No issues with booking, arrived in the afternoon, was checked in, and stayed in the room on the first floor that had 10 beds. When I arrived, I could smell the room was full of men's deodrants.... This 4 star hostel in the center of York is worth staying at. For the budget traveller it meets ones needs and includes a basic continental breakfast. Close to Micklegate, you can walk the old city walls from here all the way around, except the very few places it isnt connected. The hostel is situated a 20minutes slow walk from the... More

This is a high end hostel with excellent facilities and clean washrooms. The bathrooms are cleaned thoroughly and so are all the corridors. The beds were very comfortable and were very old- usually cheap modern beds are bought but these fit nicely. If staying as a school group/ young people you can be sure it is very safe- the heavy... I'm trying to bear in mind that I stayed in a hostel, not a hotel; so here goes :- The wait to check in was outrageous. 16 blokes, 3 rooms, no queue, and yet still 40-odd minutes...? The rooms themselves were ok. Showers/bathrooms fine, although our windows didn't shut for some reason which meant the room was mega noisy at... More

Visited this establishment for 2 night stay, group of 12 lads, got what we paid for, staff were helpful, rooms were clean and comfortable, the building over 300 years old but very modern on the inside. Just remember if you reading reviews to book, this place is a hostel. not a hotel

When we arrived, I could not believe how long it took to check in, ok they were a few people in the queue, but absolutely no excuse for 30 minute wait, what can possibly take so long? There was a big group of us and we were split over a number of rooms, they were not consistent at all; some... More

Where to start? Maybe the positives - beautiful old building, awesome location, staff are generally nice and try to be helpful, dorms spacious and beds comfortable, and extra toilets in addition to dorm ensuite. But that's where it ends... We got there and were told that they made a mistake and we would have to change rooms after the first... More
