We lunch regularly at Gilpin but treat ourselves to a short break occasionally - this was a two night stay with DB&B in one of their Master rooms - Lyth - our favourite room with a lovely open view. The hotel is very high spec accommodation with a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere without being stuffy - just right for a... More

Lovely spot, very kind staff. Slight negative is the low quality of the interior decoration (past it's peak) but otherwise quite recommendable. Not in the least because of the restaurant and the wine list. Do bring your credit card.

This is a beautiful hotel: elegant interior design, amazing cuisine, wonderfully relaxing spa treatments and the friendliest staff. Everything about the hotel is executed extremely well from the bedrooms to the gardens, but I think it's the staff who really make this a great place to stay. They are friendly and helpful and genuinely seem to enjoy their work. Already... More

We travelled to the Lakes from London (only 2.5 hours by train) and on recommendation booked to dine at the wonderful Gilpin Lodge. The experience was excellent from start to finish. The service was spot on, friendly and attentive without being too much. The setting is glorious, tranquil and breathtaking countryside, classic Lakes. The menu was extensive and unusual, and... More

But i'm gratefull they accepted my five year old. We stayed at the pettrdael suite but the jacozy was not working in our room which was a... More

We have just come to that time of year when we would be looking forward to booking our annual visit to the Lake District. For the last 20+ years this has not been an issue as we would just phone Gilpin Lodge and book our room for 5 days dinner, bed and breakfast. However as our visit last February was... More

My girlffriend and I booked to stay in the Gilpin Hotel in one of the garden suites (dollywagon pike) for one night as a bit of a treat to ourselves. We couldn't have been more impressed. From the moment we arrived to the moment we departed we were made to feel welcome. Our bags were taken to our room and... More

Everything about this place exemplifies class. We had the Lake House booked exclusively and were able to enjoy free roam of the house and the grounds. All of the staff - Peter, Liz, and Julian - were exceptional; they were amicable, helpful and nothing was too much trouble. As for the rooms; each is individually decorated and the interiors are... Official Description (provided by the hotel)
A friendly, unpretentious, luxury hotel set in the beautiful Lake District National Park, Gilpin Hotel & Lake House has been family owned and run since 1987. Members of Relais & Chateaux, the Cunliffe family were the proud winners AA 'England Hotel of the Year 2012', English Tourist Board Awards for Excellence 'Small Hotel of the Year 2012', the Catey 'Independent Hotel of the Year 2013', and Condé Nast Johansens 'Most Excellent Country House Hotel of the Year 2013’. When you stay at Gilpin, you’re not just choosing a bedroom, you’re choosing an interior design with fabulous fabrics, wallpapers and furnishings. We have evolved Gilpin Hotel over the last 25 years, spreading out instead of up, so that fourteen of the twenty bedrooms lead directly onto the gardens, many with private decking and cedarwood hot tubs, and all with lovely views. Gilpin Lake House is, put simply, a sanctuary, where just six suites enjoy exclusive access to 100 acres of private grounds, including a stunningly beautiful four-acre private lake, swimming pool and the new Jetty Spa. Enjoy pre-dinner drinks in the hotel’s stylish bar and wine cellars before dining in one of four intimate dining rooms (complimentary chauffeur provided for Lake House guests). Head Chef Dan Grigg ensures exquisite cuisine in the 3 AA rosette restaurant; the 5-course menu has plenty of choice and is a celebration of some of the finest Lake District produce and West Coast seafood. For Lake House guests, the Swedish style spa treatment room has been built to blend with the environment, raised 3 metres into the tree canopy, with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the lake. The Jetty Spa Trail is a bespoke Spa Journey designed to gently stimulate and revive the senses. Begin with a consultation to create personalised spa products just for you. Then to the spa for a private swim followed a relaxing salt snug and a reviving salt scrub shower. Through the woods to an aroma massage (and that view), followed by green tea and appetisers on the jetty. To top it off? Champagne in the hot tub, and bespoke spa goodies to take home. The ultimate goal – a deep relaxation that will stay with you for a long time. Quiet, untouched, and devoid of traffic or people the setting instils a sense of peace and calm. There are no weddings, conferences or children under seven to disturb the peace at Gilpin, just warm smiles, fresh flowers, and friendly, unpretentious service. ... more   less
