I took my American husband to The Lake District and he loved it, even though we only had 1 really warm sunny day out of the 5 - and 5 hours from Cambridge is quite a trek there AND back, the views are inspirational for his painting and the people were delightful. Foxghyll is a huge country house and the... more

We stayed for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The house only has 3 rooms, but is of some considerable size. As are the rooms. All the rooms are en-suite, and our own room was extremely comfortable & clean. From our room, we had a fantastic view of the rain, which was a shame, but the extensive garden looked... more

The brochure promised much, unfortunately apart from the location nothing was further from the truth. This is not 4 star accommodation. It was cold, damp, constantly smelt of cigarettes and dogs, the latter were unfriendly and roamed freely through the kitchen and house. The host consisted of a mother and son team. Both were rude about other guests and and the mother was extremely... more

We had the best room - the blue room. Just beautiful - very relaxing, well-designed and very comfortable beds. The en-suite could do with a shower attachment as hair-washing is not easy(Also the filthy nail brush would cost nothing to replace and was a little off-putting!) but otherwise no complaints about this room. We had friends who stayed in the... more

We spent two nights in Ambleside, and found Foxghyll purely by chance. Slightly out of Ambleside on the way to Rydal Lake. This is a lovely B&B, which offered us a very special weekend break. There are only 3 rooms at the B&B, but our room was extremely large and well kept, with amazing views of the garden and the... more

After spending 3 miserable days in a grotty B&B in Coniston, we decided to venture into Ambleside and were more than pleased with our choice of Foxghyll. It has an ideal location, that is extremely quiet and right next to the Rydal water footpath. The house itself has an enormous and well kept garden, which was like a dream come... more

We booked our stay off the cuff when we got to Ambleside. The house is like stepping back into the 70's, it is in desperate need of an overhaul. We stayed in the 'pink room' and in deed it was pink!! Although the room was large and clean, it very hard to get over the dated wardrobe and ensuite bathroom.... more

Just to set the record straight after reading the other review of this property... My wife and I stayed at Foxghyll during August 2006 and found it to be a disappointment. The dead plants in the porch on our arrival unsettled us slightly and the dirty towels from previous guests outside the bedrooms were very offputting. A pair of track... more

My wife and I have just returned from a recent 4 day trip to the Lake District. We stayed in the small village of Ambleside, which is at the bottom of Lake Windermere. Generally quite touristy, but has plenty of shops and restaurants, and is an excellent base for walks and Hikes. For our 4 night stay, we stayed just... more
