Stayed for 1 night Sunday 24th August 2014 and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Our room was in what looked like the old stable house, the room was very cosy and comfortable. The grounds very well groomed and maintained, and even has a croquet lawn. The food was excellent. The menu was versatile and very classy; a range of dishes with... More

Delighted you enjoyed your stay and many thanks for reviewing TSH. Ash's food always leaves our guests wanting to come back for more and, hopefully, we'll see you again for two or three nights perhaps? One night merely whets the appetite! TSH is a truly year-round hotel - winter is stunningly beautiful, with snow on the hills and clear, crisp... More

The hotel is worth visiting for dinner alone. We were amazed at the quality in an "ordinary" hotel. The food was beautifully presented and cooked to order. Like one of the other reviewers the owner reminded me too of Basil Fawlty in that he would pop up as you were passing reception etc, in no other way and it is not... More

Temple Sowerby House 'ordinary'?!!! Oooohhhh, I don't think so....and why should you be 'surprised' by the quality of the food? 2AA rosettes indicates that the food should be very good, and many of our guests are kind enough to suggest that we ought to have three! I hope our interior designer doesn't read your comment about her choice of fabric...it... More

We first visited this Hotel in October 2004 to meet our very good friends from York. We were so impressed with the overall experience of friendly service, exquisite food and delightful surroundings that we have re visited at least twice a year since then. Paul and Julie are always very welcoming , the staff are efficient and approachable and we... More

Many thanks for your kind words and for taking the time to review....it's always a pleasure to welcome regular guests back to TSH. Just goes to show that there's still some life left in Basil yet!! We'll pass on your comments to Ash and his team, of course - much appreciated. As you've discovered, the Eden Valley and northern Lakes... More

Wife and I sold our house in Scotland and want to move to Cornwall so off we went on a house hunting trip. Decided to drive but 900 odd miles a bit much to do in a day so two nightstops planned on the southbound leg, and two on the return. Using Tripadvisor we decided first stop would be The... More

OK, several points here...but first, thank you for comparing me to Basil Fawlty, my role model, and don't forget.....his guests didn't find him funny either! We are lucky to have great reviews from many happy guests. We know the rooms are not enormous BUT they are extremely comfortable and well-equipped. Real 'country houses' cannot create the large rooms of grand,... More

We visited this hotel as a mid way stop between home and our intended destination in Scotland and from the moment we walked in till the minute we left everything was outstanding. To be greeted by name as you walk in, shown to your room and have everything explained effortlessly made us feel very welcome (especially as we'd had a... More

This hotel is convenient for visiting Lake Ullswater, Penrith and as others have said a convenient stop on the way to Scotland. It is approx. 10 mins drive from M6. It is in a lovely village which since it was bypassed is quiet. We had a room over the front entrance which was spacious with a good bathroom. The property... More

As always, we're delighted you enjoyed your stay at TSH and thank you so much for reviewing. We'll pass on your comments to our staff. The garden's been well used this summer...not always the case! Even now, our indian summer is encouraging croquet on the lawn and drinks on the terrace, let's hope it lasts a lot longer yet! More

A great stop before or after going to Scotland. A rambling country house with an excellent chef and delightful staff. We will stay there again. Dinner was beautifully cooked and an explosion of flavours. The wine list was very well chosen. Definitely recommended!

Conveniently positioned just 5 miles off the M6, and a few hundred metres off the marvellous A66 route from Scotch Corner to Penrith, this was a real find. The Eden Valley is an area of outstanding natural beauty, nestling between the Lake District and the Pennines, and Temple Sowerby is a quiet little village, with fine views, especially to the... Many thanks for taking the time to write a review and for your kind words!
