There were flies in the restaurant during evening meal and breakfast. We were offered a taste of wine and given the wrong vintage which was disappointing considering the price. The wine waiter was abrupt. The airconditioning in our room did not work. more

Over priced over rated hotel I wish I had read Trip advisor before I stayed £600 a night and you have to pay £3.45 for a bottle of water, tired, electric shower that had no power, not even a pen the room, a luke warm bottle of sherry to greet you, food ok ish not Michelin standard average unfriendly service–... more

As regulars of The Gilpin Lodge in Windermere we've heard great things about Sharrow Bay so my husband booked it as a surprise for our 3rd wedding anniversary. A very lukewarm arrival awaited us, we ordered some afternoon tea and slipped off to the Serenity Garden room to unpack, the décor was tired, overly fussy and the electric fire(!) so... more

was taken to the Sharrow Bay by my partner as a surprise one day/evening stay for my 40th Birthday. Tim's parent's for years when he had been young had used the Sharrow Bay as their occasional weekend getaway from the kids and I believe based on their reputation Tim felt that it was where we should go for my birthday.... more

We didn't stay at the Sharrow Bay, but my afternoon coffee was more than enough to form my own opinion. We were passing through Ullswater and, having heard of this hotel, decided to pop in for coffee and a bar snack/light lunch. Eerie silenced greeted us in the lounge where we were sat. No menus were available but we were... more

My wife and I stayed here for a romantic break and we were not dissapointed. I , unlike some reviewers, liked the fact there was no check in desk, rather a nice, matronly, head of the household to take us to our room and show us around. The place was beautifully quiet and we were left to our own devices,... more

We booked the 3 night Christmas deal direct with the hotel. We wanted somewhere to take elderly parents for Christmas. We had two rooms facing Lake Ullswater (Pinkie and Silver) for the nights of Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Absolutely everything was perfect. We were warmly welcomed on arrival and our rooms were fabulous. Silver is a large... more

As both Sharrow Bay and myself were celebrating their 60th Anniversaries this year it was the ideal venue for my birthday. My husband and I together with daughter and son-in-law took advantage of their special overnight package and we were not dissappointed. We stayed in 2 of the garden suites 'Harmony' and 'Serenity',selected these as we thought they would be quieter than... more

On arriving at the hotel it certainly gives the feeling of being impressive especially the position at the side of the lake.We were shown to our room in the main house overlooking the lake.Wow what a fantastic view but then when you took a close look at the room you realised that the room was about 20 years out of... more

We spent two nights at the Sharrow Bay - luckily we stayed in the main house, as the weather was atrocious we were pleased to have not stayed in one of the lodges. Our room was very comfortable - but as other reviewers have mentioned, it does need to be brought into the 21st century without losing it's charm; for... more
