We stayed in 14 B&B's and lodges, each for one night, during our Coast to Coast walk in autumn 2009. Winner was the Keld Lodge. At the bottom was Pottergate in Richmond. Is it fair to rank on the basis of one night? Maybe not, but first impressions sometimes mean a lot. Glenthorne is a Quaker lodge, very quiet, mellow, with a number of "mature" guests. Our group was a bit younger and a bit more lively. Beautiful grounds, relaxing, clean room, modest breakfast, within walking distance to Grasmere but far enough away to avoid the tourist buses and get away from the beautiful-town-turned-ugly. Nice accommodation but nothing outstanding more

We have just returned from a weekend at Glenthorne. It provides a real 'home from home' with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and is well run by helpful and attentive staff. The food was excellent and although there was only a limited menu for the evening meal they were willing to accomodate different dietary requirements. Glenthorne is located on Easdale Road within 5 minutes walk of Grasmere and with easy access to the surrounding hills and wonderful views from the large gardens. Those seeking 4 star luxury with plasma tvs, wifi, mini bar and spa treatments may be disappointed but for those of us looking for accommodation that is comfortable, well maintained and good value Glenthorne is ideal! more
