If you wish for a warm welcome, pleasant amenable staff, varied menu from a top-notch chef, cosy bar with log fire (patronised by locals and tourists alike), look no further than the Sun at Coniston. All these pleasures we have found over many years. No reasonable request is denied - even our elderly dog was offered a blanket to dry... more

This is the type of hotel you stay at only once. No one on reception - served by a man from the bar who said that there should have been a notice up. Room on the second floor - no lift - room not much bigger than a lift (twin). Dirty sock under chair. Told staff and a very helpful... more

Stayed here with 5 other blokes for overnight stay after a day's hiking on the fells. Food was appalling and service was non-existent. Breakfast was not served until 8.50am! Staff were young, overworked and unhelful. What a shame - it's such a wonderful building in a near perfect setting. So much potential going to waste. Best avoided! more

The most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept in, the pillows should have been binned two years ago. Toiletries bolted to the wall, ok, made us feel like thieves in a rubbish location and was a bit useless for bubble bath. The breakfast was disgusting and the waitress spoke no english, she brought people a glass of boiling water for... more

I stayed in the Sun Inn with my 11 year old daughter and labrador 24th and 25th October and felt welcome and comfortable . Most of the staff were friendly and helpful, the room was comfortable with lovely views. We ate in the conservatory the first night and the pub the second night. The food was pricey but of high... more

This place has a split personality, down stairs it is very modern & contempary with nice lounges with open fires and leather chairs, then there are the bedrooms upstairs. We stopped there with some friends and we were shocked at what we found, our friends room was by far the worst and they complained about the condition & cleanliness of... more

over priced - basic food - poor service - arsey staff. went for a meal on saturday night with my girlfriend. shunted into 'conservatory area' - soulless, cold environment. served wine (overpriced aussie shiraz £14) by waitress who had no idea of how to do so - plonked the plonk down with two glasses and walked off. when she returned... more

If you are looking for a genuine, slightly eccentric English hotel experience, this is the place for you. Complete with four-poster beds, log fires, very old buildings and slightly batty staff. Oh and a rottweiler which has just adopted a very young kitten that was found abandoned. We have just returned from a night at The Sun Hotel and found... more
