I took two back to back courses so was at Higham for 7 days and did not want to leave! I learnt so much on the courses as tutors were excellent but on top of that, the food was excellent, my room quiet and comfortable and the staff always helpful and friendly. Nearly everyone on the courses were on their... More

Thank you for your review. The fact that people can come on their own to Higham and not feel on their own is an important aspect of why we do what we do. Thank you for mentioning it. Even though we are present on Trip Advisor as a B&B, everybody knows that is not the whole story and that it... More

In these days of fancy menus it is good to be able to enjoy three meals a day plus morning coffee and home made biscuits with afternoon tea using a menu traditional for many folks from years gone by Tasty self service breakfast , two choices at lunch time with a host of self service salads to make your mouth... Thank you very much for your review. It sums up Higham Hall very well. We try to look after people who come, and to help them feel it is a home from home. It is fantastic to see that the things we try to provide are noticed. We aren't hi-tech or ultra-modern, we like to think ourselves as upholding the... More

For several years I have been attending bookbinding courses at Higham Hall and have nothing but praise for Dug Mitchell the tutor I study with. Dug, a conservator finisher with the British Library, has a depth of knowledge of historical structures around which he develops courses to pass on his experience to a faithful band of student followers who through... Thank you for taking the time to post your review for us. We are so lucky to have such a good Tutor as Doug. Being able to attract someone of his quality up our end of the country is so special and he's worth every penny we pay him. (Yes, we still pay our tutors in pennies!) You might be... More

We have just returned from a most relaxing 2 nights at Higham Hall. The views from the front are stunning over the immaculately kept grounds. Sheep come right up to the boundary fence. The catering side deserves praise and a comprehensive packed lunch is offered should you be out for the day. Care needs to be taken on the approach... More

Thank you very much for taking the time to comment on Higham Hall. We are glad you enjoyed it. We value what people think very much and it is important to us what people think of the college. The road sign you mentioned has just this week had the hedge around it trimmed so it is now more visible when... More

Good: Location (once you have navigated. Setting, Grounds. View. Gardens. Lots of the amazing interior architecture. Evening meal. Library of Art books. Superb wood-panelled downstairs loo. Seating and tables in the very small bar area. Poor: Limited signage from the main road to locate the entrance. Lack of greeting or indication of what to do on arrival. Thankfully the bar... More

I can understand your frustration at not having a full welcome on arrival. As Higham operates as a residential college primarily, evenings the duty staff often double up as looking after guests for dinner and in the bar. Needless to say, since this review, improvements have been made. Duvets replaced, bedrooms re-configured and thought given as to the amounts and... More

Wonderful out-of -the-way spot for rambling (but not gambling. The staff were superb--from Barbara(the financial guru) to the house keepers who looked after our every need. I loved this place as it fit every need we had on our tour of the Lake District==== the Basselthwaite Lake area is not as well known as the more popular Windermere but it... More

Thank you for your comprehensive review, offering a good lot of advice for others considering the area. We are glad you had an enjoyable experience. We do find, indeed, that when people come for courses or just to stay, it does have a feel of a retreat, but in a good way. Thanks for taking the time to review us! More

My wife has taken painting classes for years in Chicago. Her teacher was offered a one week guest instructor gig at Higham Hall. As luck would have it, her birthday was also going to fall during this week so we flew into Manchester, took a train to Penrith, took a bus to Cockermouth and were picked up in a van... More

Thank you for your feedback. Glad you noticed the efforts the staff made to help you, we are very... More

I'd been here a few times with generally good experiences (especially the food!) but when I took my husband for a weekend's course we were really disappointed with the content and with the room we were allocated. However when we wrote to the Principal he didn't address any of our concerns but just told us we "were unlucky". We'd have... More

As the new Principal of Higham I wish to apologise to this guest for the apparent lack of interest in their complaint. As you imply, lack of validation of your concern was something that could have been easily remedied. I assure you that we have learnt from our mistakes and are striving to improve standards. Thank you for taking the... More
