Stayed for a long weekend - a group of 9 adult males from Norway. First experience of the Lake District and its terrain for most of them. All with many years of experience from walking/skiing in the Norwegian mountains, and using Norwegian hostels. 1. Very friendly and efficient service from the staff. (Nice that there are so many different nationalities)... more

My husband, 2 daughters and I had an enjoyable stay at the Ambleside YHA. Our family room was large enough with 4 lockable cupboards and bunk beds. The showers and toilets were clean with unlimited hot water. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was tasty with fruit, cereal, unlimited toast, full English ... The hostel is 1 mile from the... more

This was a very busy, fairly modern YHA located right on the lake at Ambleside. Check in staff were efficient and friendly. Twin room as expected, very compact - it is budget accommodation. The only downside we felt was the lack of adult space - there was nowhere without children swarming everywhere. Breakfast (vegetarian) was excellent and very efficiently run,... more

My boyfriend and I stayed at the YHA for one night on a roadtrip north. We were looking for somewhere cheap to stay and I'd say we paid too much for this place. The place seems clean but it is hard to tell because the whole place is just generally old. All of the furniture, carpets, etc are looking pretty... more

I went with my school, which is mainly what this hostel provides for. It was really strange for me because i usally go to hotels, but it was a good experience to have with my friends. There is no lift, so be prepared top climb..but not that far up. We had quiet a big room because there was 6 of... more

I stayed at YHA Ambleside for a stag weekend over 2 nights, as part of a large group. The hostel has an excellent location, right on Lake Windermere, and 5-10 minutes walk to the main town of Ambleside. Getting there is a bit of a trek though, with some 20% inclines on the approaching roads, so be sure your car's... more

First time in youth hostel in UK - probably the last. Location is fantastic. Downstairs communal areas are fine. Staff were very helpful. BUT upstairs and rooms are awful. I took my kids and would not let them walk in barefeet in the room. Could'nt use one of the cupboards, it was too dirty. Showers are ok if you don't... more

I have just returned from YHA Ambleside where I and 12 others were meeting for 2 nights. Although, luckily, the company was fantastic...the hostel was not. I shared a "room" with 2 others, when told it was £30 a night I expected reasonable value for money. I am not sure if it is fair to list all my complaints here,... more

We went for a private 3-bed room, which consisted of a bunk bed, another bed, a wardrobe and a sink. (showers/toilets were down the corridor) The weather was pretty warm at the time, and the room was hot and stuffy even with the window open, but it was acceptable for sleeping. There's no air conditioning or anything, which is a... more

We were very surprised on arrival at how pretty the location was. The hostel has a lake front location, Our room had a lake view, which is pretty impressive considering it was a YHA. Room was clean - however the showers were not - and smelt like bleach. There were blood stains on the shower wall. Rate included cooked english... more
