We recently spent 2 nights in Ambleside. We enjoyed our stay at Hillsdale - albeit we were out from morning till late, there is so much to see in the Lake Districts! The room was comfortable, clean and quiet and the location fantastic right in the heart of the village and a short walk from the lake. Secure parking also... More

The b&b is located ideally. At night it is very quiet which is important for me. Breakfast was very good. Rooms were clean and tidy, beds were comfortable. However what really set this place apart is Dorothy, she was fantastic offering great advice on where to visit and where to eat

You're always a bit anxious about your choice of B&B and especially if you're taking friends along. This choice could not have turned out better, made all the more wonderful by the sparkling and cheery Dorothy who looked after us like family. Excellent breakfasts, lovely clean and comfortable rooms and ideal location. Many thanks Dorothy - we'll be back! The... More

What a great B & B with comfortable clean rooms and, as the owners were way, the excellent Dorothy looking after everything; ensuring my stay was a pleasant one and providing truly scrumptious breakfasts for the 3 days I was there. Will definitely want to stay at Hillsdale when I next stay in Ambleside.

Me and my partner stayed here for 4 nights recently. The owners were very friendly and offered advice on walks, restaurants and nothing was too much trouble. The room was modern, clean and nicely decorated, as was the rest of the accommodation. There was a choice for breakfast, and as any hot food was ordered the night before, service was... More

Stayed here for two nights and really enjoyed it, excellent location to explore the lakes. Parking provided free of charge which is very handy as Ambleside can get extremely busy. The room we had was on second floor, it was nicely decorated and very comfortable. The breakfast was lovely and made fresh as you arrived in the dining room.

We were met by the friendly owners on our arrival but were a little concerned to find out they were going on holiday themselves the next day. We needn't have worried, Dorothy and her young assistant did a tremendous job in their absence. The breakfasts were beautifully cooked and there was always a plentiful supply of tea, coffee, toast, fruit... More

Arriving late on Sunday evening after 3 days camping at Tour de France this b&b was heavenly....warm welcome, offer of secure storage for our bikes & recommendations of where to get something nice to eat & a good pint of ale (the lily).....room spotless - bed amazing (although any bed would have been amazing after previous 3 in a tent).....breakfast... Had an enjoyable stay at Hillsdale in late June. The B&B is well maintained, clean and has an excellent host who is genuine and authentic. Great location too. Good choice at breakfast which you can customise to your exact preferences. There are many, many small B&B's in Ambleside but I would say this is definitely one of the better ones... More

We have just returned from a two night stay and can only compliment George and Lyndsay on a superb guest house. From the genuine warm welcome to the spotless bedroom and bathroom through to the excellent breakfasts we could not find anything to fault. Hillsdale is centrally located yet in a quiet location for shops, pubs, restaurants and is adjacent... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
This charming Visit Britain 4*Bed and Breakfast property, with free off-road parking for each room, is conveniently situated in Ambleside town centre in the very heart of the English Lake District, Wainwright's Walking Country. The beautiful waters of Windermere, Rydal and Grasmere are within easy walking distance as are the historic homes of Wordsworth, Ruskin and Beatrix Potter. Each room has been individually styled - as the B&B has been created from an original Lakeland Stone townhouse, so typical of Ambleside, no room is the same shape or size, but we hope that each one is as comfortable, attractive and pleasing as the next! All rooms have either a double or king sized bed, newly refurbished en-suite shower room and flat screen TV. Hospitality trays, hairdryers, wine glasses and corkscrew come as standard. Free wi-fi is available. Prices include a selection of breakfast choices. ... more   less
