We used a gift voucher for afternoon tea. The setting is very picturesque with a contemporary interior. There was a good choice of teas, though some come with supplements. The selection of sandwiches was reasonable; beef with masses of horseradish, very salty ehh Mayo with slightly stale edges and very nice salmon. Scones were good and the lemon dessert very... More

Set in one of the most attractive areas of Kent, The Marquis has been advertised as being THE place to stay. So when the opportunity arose to spend a couple of days here, I looked forward to seeing what it was all about. Perhaps the room we were given was the last available, but I certainly wouldn't have chosen it.... More

This hotel has a few good features but also a few major flaws. I'll star with the good: The bed was nice and comfy, though some might find the mattress to be too soft. The shower room was not big but very convenient, with two mirrors and nice locally produced toiletries. There was a very nice dressing table in the... More

Just got back from having a fantastic afternoon tea at The Marquis. The food was plenty and absolutely delicious. Each person got 2 scones with jam and clotted cream, 3 fingers sandwiches, a gorgeous lemon dessert (can't remember the name of it), chocolate brownie with strawberries, chocolate macaroon and plenty of tea. The service was fantastic and the staff were... More

A last minute booking for Eurotunnel and early morning departure left us looking for some suitable accommodation near to the terminal. Only the Classic rooms at the Marquis were available at such short notice and although our room (The Malmains) was very compact and had an uninspiring view of the carpark, it was beautifully furnished, well equipped and comfortable. We... More

Just spent a night at The Marquis on a living social deal. My wife is obsessed with L Social but I rarely enjoy as you are very often made to feel like a second class citizen. This was not true at the Marquis and the stay was very very good indeed. We upgraded to a deluxe room which was excellent... More

Had a Afternoon Tea brought me for my 50th from friends and as there seem to be hardly any places in East Sussex, the one at Rye had bad reviews, Rye Lodge decided to go further afield and it was either a Hotel at Croyden or The Marquis at Alkham...So, The Marquis it was and my friend and I was... We booked a night at the The Marquis at Alkham as a stopover on our way home from France. Our room was extremely comfortable, tastefully furnished, decorated and well equipped. Some nice toiletries were provided as well as a plentiful supply of tea, coffee and milk. Our meal was as expected from the better reviews. From the delicious amuse bouches... More

Beautifully désigned and furnished, this is a really great building in a lovely location. Our room, with its wonderful large bath in the open room, gorgeous cosmetics and Nespresso machine, was lovely. But it has virtually no ventilation, hence the installation of a large air conditioning unit which would solve the problem... but it doesn't work and therefore a broken... More

My wife gave me-who has everything- a splendid birthday present ,namely, a night including dinner and breakfast at The Marquis. Our excellent allocated room was rather pretentiously described as "Great Everden suite" - not as a good sized room with a pleasant settee. A splendid wide flat screen television and a modern coffee maker (Better operating instructions would have helped... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Come on in. Take a look around. You might just be surprised. For while the Alkham Valley, indeed Alkham village itself, suggests genteel old England at its most rural and unspoiled, the Marquis itself is something else... It's a strikingly contemporary restaurant and hotel. The product of a major renovation in 2008, what was once the village's pub, The Marquis of Granby, has been utterly transformed. Space, light, fine furnishings and beautiful fabrics and the opportunity to fine tune every detail hasn't been missed. The restaurant is a revelation. Head Chef Charles Lakin's seasonally inspired and locally sourced menus are as fresh as they are imaginative, and the elegant 21st century styling is exceptional. Queen sized pocket sprung beds are swathed in the finest cotton. Sumptuous fabrics dress windows and chairs. And an eclectic collection of art completes the mood, the mix and the personality that makes this place unique. Boutique chic in the heart of the English countryside? You've found it. You've arrived. ... more   less
