Situated by the park in St.Albans this very successful local pub is worth a visit even if it is to experience one of the oldest public Houses in the UK. Serving a varied menu and a selection of good real ales this venue holds a punch of atmosphere below its low oak ceilings. It also has a pub garden but... More

A fabulous place to stay, offering a friendly environment and great customer service. Food at the pub was delicious! A big thank you to Mr Tony for all his advice and guidance. And always making sure that we were enjoying our stay and sightseeing, not only around Arnside but to Lake District too!  We will definitely make a return!  NC... More

My headline says it all really. The queues for drinks were long and slow moving. It was a lovely sunny day so we just wanted to drink outside but wasted time indoors. We decided to buy two drinks each to save having to queue too soon again. Perhaps that is what they want their customers to do! Not that impressed... More

I have previously written a review for this pub but feel I need to do it again! I thought I would try one last time to see if anything had changed but no! This pub is dirty and has no atmosphere. Yes it has history but nothing else! We asked the staff to clean the table but after 20 minutes... More

Turned up on Saturday evening to find a party in full swing outside and most of the inside sealed off for a private event (despite that area being pretty much deserted!) Everyone else were pushed into a tiny bar area which stank of wee to such an extent that I had to get out! No bar staff in sight...I guess... More

Firstly, should have been informed live music when booking. Also, had a table practically sat on the bar and people ordering drinks over my head. Understaffed, and over priced. Website menu different so when arrived disappointed only one veggie option which was poor. Asked for chillies extra on one dish and then got mixed up. Food long to arrive and... More

If you fancy a pub that serves freezing cold mass produced tasteless lager best avoid this place. It serves a fantastic selection of real ales. It claims to be the oldest drinking establishment in Britain and it shows. Low ceilings and beams everywhere with open fires. I honestly can't think of a better place to sit down and enjoy a... For such an idyllic pub in a lovely location, it's very disappointing that the attitude of the staff let them down. Felt like we were almost in the way simply ordering the food. Friendliness would have made a world of difference to our experience. The food menu was limited (Sunday) - mains were roast dinner (chicken/lamb/beef/pork) served with potatoes, veg... More

Great location and almost a captive audience being so close to the very popular park The staff were pleasant and the food and drink offerings fine if a little on the pricey side but the cleanliness let it down Our table was sticky and dirty the floor the same and I went to look at the wine list which was...
