Just had a very nice stay at this hotel. Great location near to cathedral and local shops and restaurants. The bedroom we had was in need of updating, but was clean. Wasn't happy with the car parking charging though. The staff we encountered were all very pleasant and helpful. We had a lovely time in the winchester area during the... more

Room dark but not dark enough to hide the the totally threadbare carpet in our room. Breakfast ok but never seen scrambled eggs looking so pale and insipid. Bed clean and comfortable, bathroom ok, but just one bath towel - other hidden away in plastic bag in wardrobe - I have never seen this before. No bar snacks with pre... more

Ugly building in a beautiful city. Bed comfortable but room decor tired. Bathroom clean. breakfast reasonable on Sunday morning, not on Monday. Would recommend only at reduced rates. more

We stayed here for 2 nights last weekend and I can see why it gets mixed reviews. Location – very central, right next to cathedral *but* it backs onto the rear of the high street which can mean noise from people out drinking and from deliveries to the shops in the early mornings. So make sure you ask to be... more

We stayed here whilst visiting a friend for a night out on a 30th birthday. Great location and we had a cathedral view room which was great. Then it went a bit downhill. The room like many people say about the hotel looked a bit tired. Then without warning there was a big party downsrtairs that went on to 12.20am.... more

Well... Winchester is not a large city, so if it isn't central it probably isn't in Winchester. Winchester is a nice, relaxed and very typically English city. Nice pubs all around the place and the food is really good. The hotel is average and as said by others; trapped in a time warp. Some new interiors wouldn't hurt. But still;... more

We spent a weekend at this hotel whilst attending a wedding. It is located right alongside Winchester Cathedral and the main shopping area. The location is superb. There is almost no traffic in the adjoining streets so it is also very quiet. The hotel has a seventies feel to it largely because the annexe added at that time (to a... more

After staying here for Valentines weekend this year, the Mercure Wessex has reminded me why I tend to leave chain hotels well alone. The service was alright, and the room spacy. The location of the Wessex certainly can't be faulted. However, upon arrival there were signs all around the hotel warning us that due to a busy (but expected, surely?)... more

Stayed here for Valentine's Day. Got a great deal through Superbreaks (around half the price of booking direct through the hotel's own website, with breakfast thrown in as well). The location in the heart of Winchester can't be beaten but the hotel (built in the early '60s) feels trapped in a bit of a time-warp and a few corridors now... more
