We stayed at Keppels Head for one night for a short break in Portsmouth. The hotel is full of character, in an excellent location and we had a good sized room. The lift is well worth a visit (think Kings Speech!) and the staff were brilliant. Free parking next door. Breakfast was OK and the hotel could certainly do with... More

I had often eaten in this hotel around 30 years ago and it was quite special, therefore I had no hesitation of booking in here. I did not read the reviews until after I made my reservation and I gave it the benefit of the doubt! Having now stayed, I can sadly confirm some of the negative reviews appear to... More

Overall the hotel was good. As previously stated the hotel is dated (which really shows in the bathrooms), however it has a personality and charm you don't see in other hotels. I stayed here for three weeks, each in different rooms. Don't under estimate the difference in quality between the rooms - for example, the victory suite was wonderful, however... More

The décor is dated which is expected from such an old building, but because of this it does need a bit of a touch up as things like wallpaper were pealing off in the room, and dated furnishings that you don't see often. The staff were lovely and friendly, and the food and service at breakfast was refreshing! Although the... More

Very convenient for the great value shops and restaurants of Gunwharf Quays and a smashing small Chinese restaurant called Tin Tin and a cooperative convenience store right next door. The staff on check in, working the bar and breakfast were all very friendly, polite and helpful. My issue is with the price of £79 per night and the standard and... More

I had read all the previous reviews so was not expecting much. I was wrong. The staff were all very friendly and the food was really good. The hotel is very, very old so you would expect a few threadbare carpets and peeling wallpaper, it does need a bit of a makeover but I was pleasantly surprised..The character of the hotel... More

I knew of The Keppels Head from when I lived in Southsea, so chose it as we wanted to be near Gun Wharf. It has old world character, but none of the Old World charm. All the rooms are very tired with flaking plaster on ceilings, thread bare carpets on all the stairs, and an air that nobody loves it..... More

We stayed here for one night before getting the cross channel ferry. Yes it's tired, yes the plumbing was a bit dodgy, yes there are stains on the ceilings and threadbare carpets BUT........ We had a huge front facing room - with a great view - the bed was clean and very comfortable, the service was excellent, the breakfast very... More

We chose this hotel for a romantic escape due to its excellent proximity to the gosport ferry terminal, the dockyard and Gunwharf Keys! Bedroom and its onsuite were dark, dingy, tired and totally disgusting. Actually sobbed it was that bad. Shower that gross that we didnt feel we could use it. Thank god we only stayed for one night. Stayed... More
