The décor is a bit tired but clean throughout. Excellent location for the Historic Dockyard and Gunwharf Quays. Free parking which is a bonus (make sure you get a permit from reception). The breakfast was tasty and plentiful with lots of choice. Staff were very welcoming and helpful.

All I can say about this hotel is to proceed with caution. It's location is great, free car park and reasonable breakfast. The rest is awful. You will think you have checked into a half way house. It is tatty, falling to bits, old fashioned , noisy and horrible. I cannot believe that they had the nerve to charge £79... More

Whilst this is right by the front and the staff are friendly, it unfortunately is tired and in major need of updating. Lots of places where the wallpaper is beyond shabby and the bathrooms needs replacing. Breakfast was oily but edible. If you need somewhere right at the front, this is in a good location with parking.

Great hotel, the decor and furniture in the room was maybe a bit old but the bed was comfy, the breakfast was good and the location is ideal as hotel situated opposite Portsmouth Harbour train station and HMS Victory etc are all literally on the doorstep. What most impressed me though was the attitude of the staff, the restaurant staff... More

A lovely old building and great place to stay. Clean room, friendly staff. Lovely cooked breakfast. Very well located to the Railway station, the city center and the historic dock. Easy access day and night and does have an elevator.

I picked this place based on location which is great but...the basics of a hotel stay are bed bathroom and breakfast. Whilst the bedroom was spacious the bed itself was awful. The springs stuck in my back and we actually checked out a day early because we weren't getting any sleep. The bath had hairs in it and the fittings... More

Still in recovery position! We have travelled a lot - including third world countries where back packers hostels rate higher than this place. The curtains were falling off the rail and didn't meet, there were rubber unfixed shower attachments (circa 1960) in the carpeted bathroom with an air of unloved hotel and past caring staff. It is obvious that the... More

Yes the rooms are shabby and the nautical paintings and statues in the once-grand lobby, bar and dining room are a bit tired, so why would I stay again in this hotel named after the first Admiral Commander of the Victory? Well the staff are all great, from the friendly greeting of the ever-helpful John on Reception, to the breakfast... More

This hotel is great , its very frayed around the edges ,peeling wall paper, flaky ceilings, worn out paint, broken furniture, ripped curtains. Even the lift is antique. However the rooms bedding and towels are clean it has loads of character unlike modern hotels. I would stay there again.
