Booked this hotel via Hotels.com and a few hours prior to checking in I received a phone call from the hotel to say that there had been an overbooking and they had no room for me! No alternative arrangements or offer of help was given. Their excuse was that it was the fault of Hotels.com! On complaining I eventually got... More

Booked this prior to catching ferry however on arrival - foyer revealed sub standard expectation and so decided not to eat in the deserted restauraunt. The reception was unattended on arrival but on ringing the bell - a young man came from the front entrance where he'd been smoking. He informed us we could not pay by credit card as... More

We booked Ashby's as a last resort as all other hotels in Portsmouth were either fully booked or were charging exorbitant prices for a three night stay. (Holiday Inn Express £537). The price at Ashby's was £232, pretty good as this included a hearty breakfast. The evening meals were excellent value - congratulations to the chef. The manager Ricky and his... More

Great location, handy for beach and shops. The food was outstandingly good and the staff were wonderful - friendly and really looked after us. The bed was clean and comfy, room warm and cosy. Although the building itself is certainly old and in need of a bit of TLC; the wood panelled dining room and solid wood flooring throughout give... More

My comments on my 4 night stay here mirror most of the others about this place. Great location and reasonable value. I was given the dreaded room 4 and the bathroom was the worst I have ever had. The shower is under the stairs so anyone over 5 ft tall is crouched over and it's very uncomfortable to use. I... More

To be fair I did book this hotel on price, and the look of the place in the online photos and I was a bit disappointed. It is really rather jaded, needs some money spending to brighten and clean the place up, it was somewhat dirty around the edges, even simple things like the glasses and cutlery were rather grubby.... We had the misfortune of staying in cell 1 no wardroom just a hook on the back of the door. Little milk pot out of date broken windows, old kitchen oil outside the window. I could go on and on but this is not a gastropub or a boutique hotel.

We went there on a Sunday evening. The service was very efficient and friendly. All our requests were met without any hassle and they were extremely accommodating. The steak was cooked very well and tasted delicious. We all had starters which were nice and 2 members of our party had dessert which they said was very tasty. Well priced for... More

We had previously stayed here 3 years ago when it was under different management and decided to risk staying again to see if it had improved. Unfortunately it hadn't. I can see why there are mixed reviews of this place and the good reviews tend to be from people who have not had the misfortune of staying in room 4... More

A little hard to find and sadly no free parking in fact the pay and display overnight charge is £12! Once found we had a warm welcome by the new owners and we checked in and went to the room. The room was good and clean and well presented and despite the summer heat was well ventilated. The en suite had... More
