Stayed on Boxing Day night after visiting relatives. Hotel overlooking the common with loads of interesting rooms. Good service although relatively quiet. Room was compact but comfortable with all mod cons. Wide choice at breakfast.

A slightly odd title I grant you but not if you have tendencies towards OCD. In which case you would be advised to get up early on departure day in order to check the 14 yes 14 drawers that were provided in our room in the annex overlooking gardens & car park. As well as this dubious luxury the room... More

A family Christmas meal which included 14 adults and 6 children. The food was faultless it was piping hot even though it was a big order to serve all at once. We were made to feel welcome as soon as we walked through the door. The waitresses/waiters couldn't of done enough for us nothing was too much trouble. There were... More

Private birthday party for immediate family(all adults) was a great success and Dinner was served in the Tower Restaurant - the Library was in use for a Party Night. All requested arrangements had been made (cake, balloon, gift) and the excellent food was enhanced by the excellent service. Our previous multiple visits to this hotel were made some 45 years... This hotel is in a great location and a lovely hotel but the restaurant was a big disappointment. We booked in for Sunday lunch expecting great things but the Chief must have had a day off. Starters where straight out of the fridge. I had pate that was average with crisp bread, no warm toast, The Sunday roast was of... More

Attended a family function, a four course meal, and although the food was good the table service was very poor. The food was pre-ordered but this seemed to make no difference. Both on the first (Soup) and the mains ( I had Guinea Fowl ) by the time all the table was served those who were served first had cold... More

The bear is a great hotel. Rooms and facilities are great. Full of character and charm. The staff were friend and very helpful with a good local knowledge. The food was good and the real ales were perfect. Plenty of walking on the hotel doorstep. Well worth a visit of passing through! The wine warehouse by the hotel is well... More

We booked 'The Bear' on the amazing vfm winter offer and what a fab time we had. There were eight of us so we stayed in four double rooms - two standard and were luckily enough for the other two to be upgraded to two superior rooms. All four rooms were beautifully presented with great views across the common and... More

Visited end May 2014, loved everything about our stay in this classic hotel. Great room on top floor - cosy and snug; Fabulous location - scenery and views are beautiful; scrummy breakfast - plenty of choice whatever your taste; friendly bar with good choice of ales and snacks; cream teas also available. They even have a bowling green. As mentioned,... More

I recently attended a friends wedding here and as it is "out of the way" we decided to book a room and make the most of our time away. The hotel is beautiful in a quaint way. Our room was lovely and had a massive bed! Breakfast the following morning was very nice with a lovely choice on the menu.... More
