We stopped here for tea and cake after a walk in the woods. The surroundings are lovely and the cakes looked very tempting. We ordered the coffee & walnut and a slice of lemon drizzle. Both cakes were heavy and gave that awful 'claggy' sensation that the shop-bought variety gives. The coffee & walnut was dry, to boot. As they... More

Had a meal with family and friends. Over all the staff were friendly. We were not impressed with who we presume was the manageress who persistently belittled members of staff in front of customers. The food was mediocre but expensive. All in all we will not be returning or recommending our friends.

Had a lovely early lunch at the Saltmarsh today. The service was very very good, attentive and friendly. The food was a little more expensive than I would expect but quality and size of portions more than made up for the few pounds extra. I can see this cafe getting better and better as the new owners find their feet.... More

Now it is called "Saltmarsh Farmhouse" We passed by during a nice walk from Birling Gap, up the Cuckmore River and intended to go further to the Parish Church of All Saints in Westdean and via Friston back to Birling Gap, so we could use a bite. We ordered 2 sandwiches and a drink each. We had to wait a... More

Sadly this place has changed hands. Came today as its one of the only places my partner could get a cream tea with gluten free scones. Not anymore though. Used to be much better and better value. Shan't visit again

Decided to try the Salt Marsh Cafe today at Exceat. I was shocked at the price of £12 for 2 coffees and two pieces of cake. If the cake had at least been home made that would of helped a bit, but they were very artificial tasting and left both my husband and myself with a bad taste in the... More

My husband and I visited on Sunday when it was lovely weather and, not unexpectedly, busy. A couple we knew were already there and warned us we would have to wait for food. I ordered 2 sandwiches just after 2pm and was told I would have to wait 15/20 minutes. However when it got to 3.30pm I went up and... More

Used to be a good place for lunch or tea, a relaxing place with well spaced out tables, and great mackerel ploughmans with home made gooseberry chutney, simple mixed salad, and huge chunks of tasty wholegrain bread. Service was always a bit slow on sunny days, when they are inundated with customers, but since it changed hands recently, now takes... More

We were on a weekend walk from Lewes to Eastbourne & had stopped in Alfriston overnight. The Sunday morning we walked through Friston Forest to Exceat and to the farmhouse for coffee & cakes - super! Helpful service as we has one person in our party with food allergies.

Strewth! Ordered afternoon tea but should have ordered it two hours in advance! Three teenagers in charge on a Sunday afternoon - none of them knew what they were doing. Got orders muddled, people walking out because of wait! Must have lost a fortune in the half hour we waited!!! Such a shame in a beautiful location - won't bother... More
