Shelleys was really an excellent hotel many years ago when we first visited, now it is in need of some loving care and attention to detail to bring it back up to that standard. However, from two visits this year we have seen the beginnings of change - but there is still quite a long way to go. Service in... More

Thank you for writing and remaining loyal to the Shelleys Your comments are most helpful, especially insofar as the breakfast service is concerned. Our earnest wish is to build on the progress we are now making Kind regards More

Nice location.Very poor service. One Indian-pakistanese person was the only efficient person.Zero service even at the bar where our names were not corresponding to our room number!.A disaster . Nice rooms in the deluxe suites. We were there with two other persons.Breakfast stops at 10.30 sharp not 10.32!

We are not really sure how to read this review but are delighted there were so many aspects that the guest found favour with Sadly it has not been possible to trace their booking from the scant information provided which, in turn, has hampered our efforts to move closer to the services aspects of their critique. I wonder perhaps if... More

Shelleys has a superb location in the middle of Lewes, with parking available and a lovely private garden. It ought to be superb. But when we were there the staff service was lamentable. Complete confusion over our booking, despite having been confirmed by telephone 48 hours earlier. Our 'twin' room meant sleeping on a camper bed. The breakfast service was... More

Thank you for this review and for staying with us. Steeped in history and lying contentedly along Lewes High Street, the Shelleys has a great deal to offer and the prefect partner for a visit to historic Lewes or the amazingly good Glyndebourne Clearly there were some service issues for which we apologise with the management team working hard to... I booked a table in the Apostrophe Restaurant for 7pm on a Wednesday, but when we went down for dinner the restaurant was closed. The receptionist said something in broken English about Shelleys now being a B&B. If you can accept this sort of thing happening, then you can probably have an enjoyable stay at Shelleys Hotel, we did. But... More

Booked a 1 night stay for my birthday but not told restaurant was closed on Monday's when booking - also was not told this when checking in! Bar staff very helpful. Generally, the hotel needs updating and far more attention to detail. It looks like improvements are being made and these can't come quick enough. WiFi coverage excellent.

Set against the customer's individual scores an overall 'mark' of 2 is disheartening and we were sorry to learn we did not hit all the right notes We are however delighted there were so many positive aspects to the stay and as we have been at pains to point out we have carefully crafted plans to invest further significant moneys... We stayed in July 2015. The washbasin in room 10 still had the same nasty crack that somebody else photographed in November 2014. Obviously nobody has told the receptionist, she acted as if she was completely unaware of the problem. The rest of the room was pretty shabby too. The staff were fine and the food was alright, but this... More

Our comprehensive program of works are necessarily focused on the external renovations first. However this is not to say we are blind to what one might characterise as the more 'cosmetic' aspects of the hotel. Both are important Out of interest, the Receptionist who checked these Devonian guests in is one of the best in business. Had they articulated the... More

Our room was nice and large and well appointed. The bathroom is large and also well equiped. The quality of the towels and linen is very good, but the mattress on the bed too soft for our liking. The reception area and dining room needs some attention and maintenance. The hotel is centrally located in Lewes. The WiFi and internet... More

Thank you very much for your positive assessment and for visiting us from South Africa - a stunning part of the world The Shelleys is very much work in progress in the sense of a carefully crafted program of works being in place. Great location, nice building and friendly competent staff. However the manager was not as competent and failed to make our room into a double even though we did ask her directly and had booked one. Place is a bit like Fawlty towers and could do with a considerable make over to bring it up to scratch.

Something of a mixed review and while it is clear your overall stay was enjoyable, the issues with your bedding arrangements meant that we did not hit all the right notes, for which we apologise Hopefully your plans will allow you to visit Lewes and The Shelleys again before too long and meanwhile, renewed thanks for your custom More

Lewes is short on quality hotels and Shelleys used to be high on the list of desired places to stay. However, the hotel has gone through too many changes of ownership and management and the neglect is all to visible from poorly trained and unsupervised restaurant staff, to dirty curtains on bedroom windows as well as thread-worn chairs and sofas... While this thoughtful review is appreciated, please rest assured that a considerable sum has been invested in the hotel since the current team became involved. Most of this important work has however been behind the scenes. While the guest facing areas are crucial first and foremost must be ensuring the structural integrity of the building after years of neglect by... More
