I don't usually write holiday reviews, but this time, I write to share the experience for the benefit of others. I stayed at The Shelley's, Lewes, with my partner for 2 nights, 14th-15th April 2015. It was a very disappointing experience. We travel frequently. This is not a 4 star hotel. On arrival, no staff were visible. When a receptionist finally... More

A small handmade hotel - not too styled or corporate in character an old building with plenty of original features and character. Did feel it could do with a bit of TLC around the edges, but maybe that is part of it's charm? The receptionist reminded me of a school secretary, maybe a bit more customer service training would help!... More

We very much appreciated your visiting us from an equally historic Winchester and thank you for your positive assessment. The new management team are working hard to tidy up many of the "loose ends" that you mention so we hope you will see further improvements when you next visit We have reception/night porter cover round the clock but it is... The hotel is very conveniently situated. The room was very pleasant and I love the crisp linen sheets and tablecloths, napkins etc. Hard to make yourself understood with the staff who were trying their best but didn't quite get it. Not sure why we had to have our breakfast in the bar for one day. We ordered some wine and... More

We appreciated your visiting from the Channel Islands and were heartened that overall your stay was enjoyable, even if there were a few teething difficulties for which we apologise The new management team are very much up for the challenge and are making solid progress, so when you next visit, you should notice further material improvements More

We decided to visit The Shelley's based on earlier reviews and found the whole experience a total disappointment. We booked via the hotel website 7/10 days in advance and received an Email confirmation, on arrival we were told the booking had not been received, so why did we receive the Email. We were initially offered room 11, we rejected this... More

We were sorry to learn your birthday celebrations were marred by some challenges during your stay in Lewes. Nevertheless we hope you enjoyed your visit to our historic market town The management team are working their way through a number of issues - predominantly of a maintenance nature - left by the previous incumbents in a purposeful and diligent manner.... We spent one night at this lovely grade 2 listed 17th Century country house hotel, with parts dating back to 1588. By its very nature, one knows that such a building will have lots of character and quirky features that a large hotel chain with their modern rooms will not/cannot provide. The public rooms are full of Georgian charm and... More

We only spent two nights at Shelley's and we got what we expected. For the extra expense over a "budget hotel", we had a nice room overlooking the main road and the Downs beyond, (OK, so if you stood at the window and looked down, it also overlooked the dustbins, but who goes away and spends the day looking out... We appreciate your visiting us from Kent and thank you so much for this review The new management team are making good progress so your kind words are just what the doctor ordered. The stay at the hotel started badly - our car was scraped by a visitor in the car park who did not leave their details. The response of the receptionist was “I have been here 15 years and this has never happened before" and “we are not liable” – hardly great empathy or customer care. When asked if she could... More

This is a troubling review and clearly this guests enjoyment of Lewes, the hotel and their visit to our lovely market town was marred by the selfish actions of someone in the car park, for which we can well and truly empathise. Of course our reception team were aghast but quite rightly cannot become involved in the nitty gritty of... More

The Shelleys Hotel This was our second visit to this hotel and it was little short of a disaster. We arrived on an early January evening, during a cold snap, to find our room and subsequently the entire hotel unheated. Not only was the girl who showed us to our room unable to correct the heating, but it appeared that... More

Having been unable to trace details of this booking and with the guest not making their concerns known to general management at the time, we are left with hoping that we can reach out to them through TripAdvisor While we are of course sorry that they appear to have encountered some challenges, equally, we had no outages with the heating... The superior rooms are better value for money. The Standard rooms appear to be very small . Breakfast was freshly cooked and well presented. The choice of cereals was not great. Porridge was freshly cooked and excellent. The superior room was comfortable. Overall not in my view a four star experience

It is potentially a lovely hotel with cheerful and helpful staff, but the lack of attention to detail let it down. We had a very comfortable suite, but a handle on a drawer was missing, a light bulb in the chandelier was broken, the radiator valve was broken and the loo brush holder was cracked. There was no note pad... More

In thanking you for this detailed critique, we were of course sorry you experienced a number of challenges, which detracted from your overall stay at the Shelleys We have taken your comments to heart and with our new management team having only taken over in the second half of December, this feedback could not come at a better time We...
