Once again another enjoyable stay at the Grove and I can never say enough about the hotel and the staff working there. Nothing is too much trouble for them to do and means that it is really a pleasure and relaxing place to stay - which is something that is much needed for both those suffering with cancer or a... I have stayed at this hhotel now twice and have enjoyed each time immensley! the surroundings are tranquil and do not make one feel like a "Cancer Patient" at all - sensitive staff, who are professional and friendly, taking a real interest in the client. Being near to the town centre is a real plus, with buses a stone's throw... More

This hotel was highly recommended to me when I was coming to terms with a cancer diagnosis and I spent two nights here with my husband, sister and brother-in-law in March 2014. It was a wonderful tonic! The hotel is bright, warm, spotlessly clean and airy, with beautiful grounds, cheerful, comfortable and well equipped rooms, delicious meals and the kind... More

This is a unique hotel for those suffering from life threatening diseases who are welcome with or without their carers, or just for the carers who may be exhausted and need a break. It is a well equipped, elegant hotel, that produces delicious, nourishing home cooked food. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, although there is no hands on nursing there... More

Following a week of radiotherapy, the Maggie's cancer support centre! mentioned this hotel. It is a not for profit hotel, supported by the Local Macmillan Cancer charity. As keen travellers our trips have been curtailed by treatment but a good weather forecast and need for quiet and peace meant that within two days we were installed in a wonderful room.... More

We have just come back from our fifth stay at The Grove in just over a year. We have been at all times of the year and have thoroughly enjoyed every minute, no matter what the weather. Just walking through the front door, the stress drops off you. The hotel is spotlessly clean and the food is excellent; if you... More

We hosted a three day 'Escape' for young adults living with a cancer diagnosis at the Grove. From the planning stages through to the actual weekend event the team have been absolutely brilliant - going out of their way to make sure everything ran smoothly (which it did!). The friendliness of the team is second to none and the quality... More

We came from Austria to see this great place, to get be inspired for a similar idea in Austria. This hotel is really something special. Friendly Welcome, the staff couldn't have been more friendly, the dinner was delicious. We had a nice cosy room, and a lot of fun at the evening entertainment. A place to feel good!!! :))

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Grove is a very special place, it is an hotel that provides holidays for people with cancer or life threatening/limiting illnesses nationwide. Guests can come with their families, friends, carers or alone if they wish. Everyone is welcome at The Grove, it has a family atmosphere and guests often become friends of the hotel. It is a newly refurbished hotel owned by Macmillan Caring Locally (formerly Macmillan Cancer Trust) which opened in Bournemouth June 2011. The hotel might be new but the idea and what it provides for guests are not. In 1985 the consultant at the Macmillan Unit Christchurch and the first secretary of the Trust, the late Charles Hall sent some patients for a short respite holiday to a general hotel in nearby Swanage. On their return the positive benefits of that holiday were obvious for all to see, and the patients talked about their experience for weeks after. The effect on these few patients was the inspiration for The Trust to open a specialist hotel which catered exclusively for people with cancer (now including life limiting/threatening). Albany Lodge was purchased and opened for guests in August 1986.The inspiration and philosophy of Albany Lodge is with us still, but has now transferred to The Grove Bournemouth, along with all the staff who worked at Albany Lodge. The staff members have increased, but under the guidance of Brenden Howard and his management team, the same friendly helpful manner, where nothing is too much trouble still exists. The chefs work extremely hard to provide appetising, balanced and nutritional meals which are served in the lovely Garden Restaurant. Guests who have particular dietary needs are met, if known in advance. There is also a qualified nurse on duty 24/7 for advice and support, or to assist in an emergency situation should one arise. ... more   less
