The 4 Star, AA Rosette Grand Hotel occupies pride of place on the Torquay seafront, commanding majestic views over the bay and out to sea. It has undergone restauration, the result is a perfect blend of modernity mixed with the opulence and grandeur of bygone days, when hotels were the places for society to be seen. In addition, The Grand has one of the most advanced conference facilities in the south west, accommodating from 4 to 300 delegates. more » « less

We recently stayed at The Grand Hotel which in my opinion not so grand. The staff are trying hard to create an atmosphere of congeniality but in others ways it failed badly. We had dinner in the lounge on the first night and we found the food really not good. My son's hamburger was almost raw and we asked that... more

We booked last minute Easter week 2007 through a website and got a bargain! For £50 we got a double room and breakfast! And we had a room at the front with the great view of Torquay. The pool was not in use (it was warm weather) as it was being cleaned or renovated. Positives The view and breakfast, which... more

Lets start from the begining...... Parking is a problem although the hotel does have a limited parking area which was full on our arrival. Reception suggested we park at the nearby rugby club..at £6.50 for 24hr stay? tempting but no thankyou! so we risked on street parking some distance from the hotel. Arrived at the room (303) which wasn't a... more

I am horrified to read the experience that you have been through recently at the hotel, the level of service that you recieved from the bar staff at the hotel is totally unaccpetable and we will fullyinvestigate this. Again it apears that breakfast was particularly unorganised on that particular morning and I would like to apologise for this. In a...

My wife and I just return from the weekend break in Torquay celebrate our wedding anniversary. We booked The Grand Hotel from their website and got the good deal for 2 nights in Deluxe Selected Seaview Room (all this room type is located on 4th floor) nice sea view. We booked first night on Dinner & Breakfast Package and the... more

Thank you for your positive response to the hotel and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for pointing out the short comings in regards to your bedroom. I will be discussing these with my Executive Housekeeper early next week. Since the Richardson Group purchased the Grand Hotel back in 2001 we have undergone some extensive refurbishment...

We should have taken the hint from all of the reviews but the Grand is definitely not up to scratch and in desparate need of an extensive refurb. We booked a sea view room and were totally disappointed. The room hadn't seen a lick of paint in years and was shabby, tired, extremely hot contstantly, had chipped and broken furniture... more

Since taking over The Grand Hotel in 2001 the Richardson Group have spent time and money restoring the hotel’s ground floor reception rooms to their original Victorian and Art Deco splendour. We have now moved onwards and upwards and are undertaking a rolling refurbishment of all the bedrooms and suites. A new 11 person lift is also being installed. These...

I arrived at the hotel, i did struggle to no where to park as i believed the carpark had a hotel, i ended up parking in the Railway station carpark, apparantley there are some reserved spaces in that car park for The Grand but they were full. I never did find out where there car park was. On entering the... more

Where do we start? Fawlty towers is still alive and well in Torquay. On check in nothing went well - no porters to help with luggage, rooms not ready and had to chase them to chase housekeeping. Two of the rooms were sad and tired looking with the cot allocated in the wrong room. The other room we had was... more

The only basil you will find at The Grand Hotel is in our sumptious food. It would appear that you experienced an abnormal catalogue of errors during your stay as most of our guests say how much they enjoyed their stay and how happy and friendly the staff are. We cannot agree that apathy is a word to be used...

I also stayed here recently to attend the same conference as the previous two reviewers. I would agree with their comments that the staff have uniformly good attitudes (although I had to make three separate visits to the reception desk to confirm my partner's arrival/stay on final night...first reception staff person supposedly made a note of his name, but later... more

As you say, The Grand Hotel shows its age. However, since taking over The Grand Hotel in 2001 the Richardson Group have spent time and money restoring the hotel’s ground floor reception rooms to their original Victorian and Art Deco splendour. We are now moving up and are undertaking a rolling refurbishment of all the bedrooms and the installation of...

I'd describe this as 'faded luxury.' Room was perfectly clean & comfortable and fairly spacious, but looked dated, corridors were shabby though they appear to be refurbishing. Location was great - directly opposite the station, and a pleasant 10 min walk to the conference venue I was attended, plus a nice view of the sea. Nothing to complain of, and... more

The faded luxury is being brought back to full colour. Since the Richardson Group took over in 2001 the Grand’s ground floor has been transformed with a sympathetic restoration exposing its magnificent Victorian and Art Deco architectural characteristics. The refurbishment now continues in the bedrooms and the faded luxury will be replaced with up-to-date well appointed rooms with luxury furnishings...

I stayed at the Grand during a conference at the nearby Riviera Center in April 2008. My reservations had been made by the conference organizers, and when I arrived I was greeted by a startlingly (even alarmingly) perky desk staff who checked me in quickly and efficiently. My room was very pleasant: reasonably spacious for a British hotel, with four... more
