Homeless people live in better conditions. Health and safety needs to be reviewed.. My room was in a terrible state.. The plaster on the wall had peeled off and was touching the radiator. Bed was uncomfortable and itchy.. Did not feel clean and shower had very little power. Found half a bottle of whiskey and 3 cans of lager in... More

This place is in need of some serious TLC. In its hay day, this would have been a bustling part of town, and plenty of businesspeople wanting rooms. The hotel now seems more focused on its plentiful selection of beers in its bar, rather than the accommodation on offer. Rooms were averaged sized with clean bedding and bath rooms. There... More

This hotel has seen it's better days. The finish and maintenance is far below acceptable level although the cleaning was acceptable. The breakfast was a great surprise though and tasted excellent. Staff were friendly but the owner seemed a bit on the not so focused side. Lot's of stairs up and down so travel light. The city offers a lot... More

Good points -cheap, clean, hot showers, close to railway station, and good beer served in the bar. On the other hand -shabby decor (needs painting), staffed more like a hostel than a hotel, no luxuries. Don't come here for a romantic pamper break. Worth considering if you need cheap place to crash in the centre of Exeter.

Summary For the unfussy, seasoned traveler who wants good value, basic accommodation in a very convenient location for public transport and especially trains and bikes, this is can be a good place to stay. It is not going to deliver the slick, consistent, modern hotel experience you can expect from the big brand chains - if their standards are your... More

The hotel is situated right next to Exeter st David's station I booked a single room and was given a double so it was spacious although the shower was a little tight. The breakfast was fine and the staff very helpful

Booked this hotel at late notice, I wished I'd of slept in the car!. The whole hotel is dated and run down, the carpet has seen better days as well as most of the fittings and features. My room was cleanish if you didn't inspect too hard, nothing in the room matched and was in very tired condition. The bed... More

We have just returned from a weekend in Exeter attending what should have been a really enjoyable works reunion. I booked myself and my wife into the Great Western hotel even after reading some of the awful reviews on this site. My thoughts were along the lines of 'it can't be THAT bad' - believe me dear reader, it is... More

I have never left a complaint before but felt this had to reported on..it was dreadful..old..staircase carpets had holes on the treads..so dangerous. No lifts... wallpaper peeling off the walls..no hot water ..the breakfast was nice but the table was not set and not cleaned. There was a musty smell which was unpleasant..I would have said this to the manager... More
