Had some trepidation about booking for 10 days in August into a small hotel (20 rooms) in a very small fishing village, St Mawes in Cornwall but any fears were soon brushed away by an extremely helpful, sophisticated and welcoming staff. Highly professional operation with an excellent restaurant manager (65 covers). Breakfast and lunch particularly good (dinner choice a little... More

Went into the hotel for an evening drink as a non resident with a view to making a booking in the restaurant for the following evening. Service was very slow and it felt like we were being ignored. We thought we would give it a second chance by going in for afternoon tea the following day. Tried to order at... More

We spent 4 nights here as part of a Cornwall trip. What a great decision. Our room, room 8, has opening doors on two walls with juliette balconies, giving a sense of being in the water at high tide. The room is elegantly decorated with enough space to be comfortable and a sense of complete privacy. Very high quality finishings... More

This was our first visit to The Idle Rocks and it won't be the last. Every aspects of the hotel was wonderful especially our room - number two. It had a fantastic bathroom and brilliant views over the harbour. The staff were excellent as was the food. We felt very special and valued. Small touches also made all the difference... More

Good to see that this place has been restored following the disastrous storms earlier this year. Full marks to the owners (and presumably the insurers) for getting the show back on the road. The outside terrace is delightful with stunning views, especially on a sunny day. Interesting menu, with plenty of 'light' dishes. My lobster, crayfish and avocado salad was... More

The Idle Rocks is a wonderful place to stay. The rooms are very high standard and some very up to date tech. The staff were so helpful and very kind. When the internet went down they were bending over backwards to get it sorted. The food is superb. The poached brill was the star meal I had. The kids room... More

I've just come online to write a review of the property and was very surprised (and shocked) to find a number of poor reviews by other recent patrons. To frame my review: I stayed at Idle Rocks for 6 nights with my partner, had dinner in their restaurant twice, and had a cream tea one afternoon on the terrace. It... More

My husband and I experienced mediocre restaurant service whilst staying at the Idle Rocks recently. We had booked a two night break with dinner on the first evening. What a disappointment our evening meal was. We felt forgotten from the moment we entered the restaurant, had to ask for menus, ask for our order to be taken, ask for a... More

Just returned from a trip to St Mawes. I booked the Idle Rocks for a cream tea, as I recently visited with a friend and was very impressed. We were asked to take a table outside which was fine as the weather was lovely. After sitting and waiting to be served for fifteen minutes I had to go inside to... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Idle Rocks has the most enviable location in St Mawes, overlooking the harbour with views across the River Fal to Falmouth. Our 20 bedrooms, most with stunning vistas over the bay, have been thoughtfully designed, each having their own unique identity with fabulous fabrics and decor that leave you in no doubt that you are by the sea. After a long day lazing on the beach, our south facing terrace is the perfect place to relax, have a long drink, and watch the world go by. You may even see your dinner being landed on the harbourside. The Idle Rock’s restaurant, run by our head chef, Peter Conlin, is a celebration of Cornwall; showcasing a range of fabulous produce that has been sourced locally using only seasonal fresh ingredients. In many cases it will have been swimming right on our doorstep only a few hours earlier and while the food is of the very highest standard our setting is very relaxed. ... more   less
